UC San Diego Temporary Employment Services (TES) is recruiting for temporary Banquet Servers. Working through UC San Diego’s Temporary Employment Services is a great way to obtain permanent employment at the University!

Assignments typically last 3 - 6 months. Compensation: $19.06/hour plus vacation, sick, and holiday pay. Part Time Variable Schedules are available.


Act as a working team leader with responsibilities to include banquet service, customer service, on-the-job training and quality control in a catering environment. Basic responsibilities will include any or all of the following: problem-solving in a timely manner, catering event management, customer service and complaints, staff shortages, equipment and personnel. Will follow established procedures in the absence of the supervisor. In coordination with their supervisor, will be responsible for banquet set-up, customer service, controlling labor hours and event execution. Skill and knowledge to provide banquet service based on the American Banquet Association standards of etiquette.- Leads staff and delegates to them any or all of the following: food preparation, off-site catering, special events, customer service, deliveries sanitation, cleanliness and safety.

  • Independently sets-up cold and hot food service buffets for catering events to include elaborate banquet displays, theme props and decorations.
  • Prepares list of equipment for events; pulls equipment, polishes and stages equipment prior to event.
  • Sets up off site catering events to include building workstations and kitchen preparation areas.
  • Provides formal banquet and table service according to the standards of the American Banquet Association etiquette.
  • Duties include correct service of food, break-down of trays and service of wine and champagne.


  • Proven food service experience in a quality food or hospitality service operation, or institutional food service role; an equivalent combination of education in a restaurant, catering, or retail operation.

  • Skill to interact and communicate positively with other staff and customers.

  • Knowledge and ability to effectively utilize employees and equipment in daily routines as well as unforeseen emergencies in a catering environment.

  • Knowledge and skill in teaching and delegating of tasks to subordinates and effectively monitoring and evaluating their performance in a catering environment.

  • Skill and ability to handle stressful situations, multiple deadlines and difficult people in a calm professional manner.

  • Skill and background in culinary arts, with skill as a banquet server and skills to create and present food attractively.

  • Has current California Driver's License with ability to maintain a good driving record through DMV report.

  • Writing skills to communicate procedures, evaluations and recommendations to management.

  • Demonstrated initiative to: 1) identify unit level problems and/or needs 2) develop solutions and/or needs proposals 3) and implement action plans with limited assistance and input.

  • Mathematical, and accounting skills to accurately complete forms, and service records and understand reports in order to make recommendations and take appropriate actions.


  • Experience as a shift lead or supervising within the food industry.
  • Possess basic computer skills; knowledge of accessing online resources and training.
  • Degree in Nutrition or related field.
  • Training in food and/or hospitality services.


  • A background check and reference checks are required.
  • CA drivers license is required and DMV check will be initiated.
  • Flexible availability for early morning, afternoon, and evening shifts (may be scheduled on weekends and/or holidays).
