DESCRIPTION
UCSD Health Sciences is a $1 billion dollar plus organization encompassing 16 academic departments (14 clinical, 2 basic sciences), 2 preacademic/hospital departments, 2 professional schools (School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences), 2 hospitals, and various other programs and units all dedicated towards fulfilling the Health Sciences missions. The UCSD Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM) is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world-class researchers study fundamental cellular processes and pathways using a variety of techniques from classical genetics and fluorescence microscopy to high throughput genomics, systems biology, and crystallography. Our 36 faculty and over 200 postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and research staff work on the cutting edge of biology, cutting across fields from basic biochemistry and genetics to genomics, systems biology and stem cell biology. The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. Under direction, the Structural Biology Research Associate will work independently to design, develop and perform advanced laboratory experiments related to the cloning, expression, purification, and biochemical/structural characterization of proteins and protein complexes important for mitotic and meiotic genome organization and cell division. The Research Associate will make innovative, original contributions to experimental techniques as part of method development and achieve the goals within a defined time frame.
As a senior member of the research team, the incumbent will also be responsible for teaching and guidance of undergraduate students, graduate students, and starting post-doctoral fellows. Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced theoretical knowledge of and direct experience with chemistry and biology typically acquired at the university level or an equivalent level of education and experience.
Proven advanced knowledge of structural biology; specifically x-ray crystallography and electron microscopy.
Demonstrated experience in chemistry procedures and chromatography including chromatographic separations, spectrophotometry, proper handling of enzymes; proven ability to perform enzymatic reactions.
Proven ability to develop, design, and execute research involving complex proteins and protein-DNA interactions.
Proven ability to perform protein purifications using FPLC instruments.
Proven ability to calculate and prepare chemical solutions accurately, ability to carry out new experimental procedures with accuracy and efficiency.
Proven ability to follow stepwise experimental protocols, skill and ability to keep accurate data.
Proven ability to provide significant innovative contributions to laboratory experiments and procedures.
Demonstrated experience providing training to lab members (Postdocs, students, staff researchers) related to protein purification and biochemical analysis.
Strong interpersonal communication skills; experience setting priorities and learning new techniques; experience setting up techniques following published protocols; experience training, orienting and providing direction to new users to lab operating procedures and routine methods.
Demonstrated experience managing daily operations of a medium- to large-sized laboratory.
Previous experience working with biohazardous materials and potential carcinogens.
Proven experience developing and contributing to grant proposals/ research manuscripts.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- PhD degree and postdoctoral experience.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $68,517 - $110,273 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $32.81 - $52.81
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
