The Statistician will work as part of two landmark studies:

The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD, https://abcdstudy.org) Study will determine how childhood experiences (such as sports, videogames, social media, unhealthy sleep patterns, and smoking) interact with each other and with a child’s changing biology to affect brain development and social, behavioral, academic, health, and other outcomes. UCSD is one of 21 institutions nationwide that has recruited families to participate in the ABCD Study.

The HEALthy Brain Child Development (HBCD, https://heal.nih.gov/research/infants-and-children/healthy-brain) Study will recruit a large cohort of pregnant women from regions of the country significantly affected by the opioid crisis and follow them and their children through early childhood. The study will collect information beginning at birth and continuing through early childhood, including structural and functional brain imaging; anthropometrics; medical history; family history; biospecimens; and social, emotional, and cognitive development.

The incumbent will help with data analysis efforts for both studies simultaneously, including implementing diverse methods for statistical inference and prediction, data reporting for QC purposes, and analyzing, writing, and creating visualizations for internal reports, presentations, and manuscripts.

The incumbent will independently identify appropriate statistical approaches, utilizing both traditional and modern methods, perform statistical programming, create data analysis files, and implement data analysis. The incumbent will also create statistical reports and interpret complex analysis results for justifications of sample size for grant applications, new protocols, periodic progress reports, and manuscripts in collaboration with researchers.

The incumbent will support existing and new databases, including the processing of complex data files, implementing quality control protocols. The incumbent will work closely with the leadership to develop and implement the necessary protocols, processes, and timelines for data linkage, data review and correction, and preparation of the dataset for public data release.

The incumbent will also be responsible for developing applications with the engineering team to facilitate data exploration and analysis among consortium members. The incumbent will also conduct and report on relevant literature searches for studies requiring moderately complex statistical methods. The incumbent will draft methods and analysis sections of manuscripts. The incumbent will develop most effective graphical and tabular presentation of data, as well as present on these data results orally, in writing, graphically, and in various forms of presentation media.

Lastly, the incumbent will attend meetings regarding all phases of clinical research studies and discuss progress, problems, and ideas for analyses and interpretation, as well as lead presentations of analytic results at the meetings and conferences.

Works on research data reporting assignments that are of moderate diversity in scope. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Six (6) years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two (2) years of related experience/training.

  • Strong working skills in statistical analysis, systems programming, database design and data security measures.

  • Working skills in analysis and consultation.

  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.

  • Experience in statistical modeling of cluster-correlated data (e.g., longitudinal analyses).

  • Must have experience using the R statistical programming language.

  • Experience in Python and/or MATLAB beneficial.

  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.

  • Working knowledge of research function.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
