DESCRIPTION

The multi-disciplinary laboratory within the Department of Pediatrics works in the fields of RNA and Chemical biology. The laboratory explores the role of RNA modifications in cancer, immunity, and stem cell biology. Projects in the lab use cell culture, animal models, neural stem cells, 3D organoids, human pluripotent cells and several molecular tools to investigate fundamental mechanisms of cancer development, AIDS, COVID, and immune disorders.

Under general supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Staff Research Associate III will perform cellular and animal lab experiments, making significant independent contributions in the design, troubleshooting, modification and analysis of experiments and protocols. Incumbent will also perform experiments using tissue culture techniques such as PCR, plasmid purification, iPSC production and characterization, and HT screening and sequencing, gene silencing, cloning, CRISPR genome editing, cancer models, drug treatments, under general supervision. In addition, the incumbent will independently support duties to include RT-PCR, qPCR, DNA and RNA molecular experiments, western blotting, immunoprecipitation, affinity purification, analyze and report data, prepare complex solutions, reagents and culture media and run cell analyses to ensure quality and control.

The incumbent will be responsible for implementing and performing a variety of new and on-going experimental protocols, making significant research contributions to the laboratory and making innovative contributions pertaining to complex experimental procedures of iPSC production and characterization. May provide training and direction and work cooperatively with other SRAs, including doctoral and student lab assistants. Compile and analyze research data, draft articles and grant proposals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced theoretical knowledge of and direct experience with Stem Cell biology as typically attained by a Bachelors degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Strong experience with research design, protocol development, and qualitative and quantitative research methods to independently address scientific challenges to move the project forward.

  • Direct experience overseeing research projects.

  • Experience authoring journal articles, abstracts, and posters. Ability to prepare papers for publication and research proposals. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials. Review the scientific articles and make innovative contributions to develop new research techniques and improve current protocols for the research projects.

  • Proven knowledge of microscopy imaging procedures and in vivo analysis.

  • Strong demonstrated experience in analysis and management of complex data.

  • Strong experience in qualitative research methods.

  • Ability to interface appropriately (with diplomacy and in confidentiality) with campus staff and investigators.

  • Proficiency in the use of computer based spreadsheet, database, word processing communications and statistical applications (e.g., EXCEL, SPSS, ACCESS, WORD, ENDNOTE, POWER POINT, SAS).

  • Proven ability to perform scientific procedures including confocal microscopy, DNA and RNA isolation, and histological analysis.

  • Demonstrated ability to make innovative contributions pertaining to complex experimental procedures.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience working with and handling small animals including mice. Knowledge of normal physiological data of rodents, particularly mice. Experience with small animal husbandry and excellent organizational skills to manage all lab animal work.

  • Proven knowledge of laboratory safety including radioactive/biohazard handling and disposal techniques, and the ability to ensure laboratory compliance with required safety regulations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in cell biology, biochemistry, chemical biology, or genetics.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $62,324 - $100,220 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $29.85 - $48.00

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
