DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The School of Biological Sciences is comprised of four academic departments, Cell and Developmental Biology, Ecology Behavior and Evolution, Molecular Biology, and Neurobiology, which reflect broad foci in faculty research and in the academic programs offered by the School. Each department is headed by a Chair who works individually to represent their department, and works collaboratively as a member of the School’s Council of Chairs (CoC) on those school concerns which cross the boundaries of section governance. The School has over 100 faculty FTE and approximately 5000 undergraduate students in 8 majors, with annual enrollments of approximately 30,000.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Staff Research Associate will conduct research related to plant species adaptation to drought. Specifically, the SRA will work as part of an ongoing field experiment, keeping track of growth, flowering, and traits for more than 1000 plants growing in a common garden environment. The SRA will work to maintain the experimental infrastructure, pollinate plants by hand, and collect samples for analysis in the lab. Further, the SRA may undertake additional research projects with support of academic supervisors, making contributions pertaining to ecology and environmental change.
QUALIFICATIONS
Theoretical knowledge of ecology or related field as learned in B.S. studies and/or a combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of common local plant species and ability to identify native and invasive plant species.
Skill, ability, and willingness to learn new lab and field techniques rapidly and as needed.
Skill and ability to operate all standard equipment of the contemporary ecology laboratory including the ability to assist in the assembly, testing and operation of environmental sensors to be used in the field.
Ability and willingness to read scientific papers as directed in order to stay abreast of developments within the field and relating to current experiments.
Knowledge and ability to use power tools in construction and maintenance of experimental infrastructure.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills (English) needed to interact well with others to facilitate communication about lab requirements include ability to discuss and understand day-to-day research plans, results and ideas with PI & other personnel in a constructive, professional and pleasant manner.
Ability to independently use Apple and PC computers and associated word processing, spreadsheet software and databases with willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.
Knowledge of MSDS's (Material Safety Data Sheets), and the hazard communication & Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items such as gloves and goggles. Knowledge of basic first aid procedures.
Demonstrated excellent organizational skills including ability to keep clear and accurate records, organize a varied workload, follow written and oral protocols and to give oral presentations on the progress of research.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Requires a willingness to work outdoors, all day, in often hot and uncomfortable conditions.
Requires the ability to lift 35 pounds at or above head level.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $55,374 - $66,064 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $26.52 - $31.64
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
