The Moores Cancer Center is one of just 51 in the United States to hold a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. As such, it ranks among the top centers in the nation conducting basic and clinical cancer research, providing advanced patient care and serving the community through outreach and education programs. The Cancer Center's mission is to translate promising scientific discoveries into new and better options for the care of patients with cancer. The Center supports one of the broadest ranges of cancer activities in the nation - from fundamental and translational cancer research in molecular genetics and advanced molecular therapeutics, and from population studies of cancer incidence to community education about cancer prevention and risk reduction.
Under supervision, assist with performing research techniques and research and development studies to optimize the isolation, expansion and modification of patient-derived T cells and to develop methodologies under current good manufacturing conditions (cGMP) to re-administer the cells to the donor patients.
Assist Cancer Immunotherapy Program (CIP) personnel with establishing scalable procedures to expand and transfect T-cells to form CAR-T cells and support the preclinical and clinical development of these drug candidates. These engineered T-cells will be created by the employment of a number of modern molecular biology techniques including cell transduction and transfection techniques that employ viral and nucleic acid vectors. Assist personnel with generation of clinical grade viral vector systems and the production of gene delivery systems that will be transitioned into a cGMP facility. Other duties assigned as needed.
Theoretical knowledge of cell biology, immunology, biotechnology, and/or stem cell biology.
Theoretical and practical knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology and genetics including relevant techniques. Knowledge of flow cytometry and FACS.
Experience with sterile technique and the ability to perform cell culture.
Experience with cellular immunology and/or tumor biology.
Ability to work with cellular transfection/transduction methods.
Ability to work with in vivo or in vitro assays systems, e.g. ELISA, Cytokine determination, ELISPOT, proliferation and cytotoxicity assays.
Demonstrated experience working in and maintaining a laboratory environment.
Proven ability to accurately keep records regarding cell lines, source, passage, and genetic manipulations. Proven ability to independently organize, analyze, and interpret data.
Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as effectively and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.
Experience with the operation of a personal computer, servers and software applications, such as MS Word and Excel. Knowledge to work with and learn new software for analysis.
Ability to follow UCSD Environmental Health and Safety requirements including the ability to write with correct syntax and grammar and to clearly communicate ideas and protocols in writing to EH&S.
- Ability to work with primary mammalian cell culture and with PBMC (Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells).
- Enthusiasm for learning new techniques and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles. Ability to train students on same.
- Experience with T-Cell biology. Experience isolating primary human T-cells from blood products using both manual and automated systems for sterile cell culture. Experience transducing and immunophenotyping primary human T-cells using aseptic technique.

- Must be willing and able to work weekends and evenings when necessary.
- Must be able to handle blood samples and be trained for biohazards.
Pay Transparency Act Full Salary Range: $51,949 - $61,972 Annually
The University of California, San Diego is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Expected Pay Scale. Placement within the Expected Pay Scale is determined by internal equity, relevant qualifications, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
