DESCRIPTION

As an academic administrative unit in the School of Medicine, the mission of the Department of Family Medicine is to create an academically rich, culturally diverse and safe environment for our trainees and patients, by following the most up to date safety measures, clinical standards and evidence-based medicine. The Department of Family Medicine has approximately 200 personnel including 70 salaried faculty and Management and Senior Professional (MSP) physicians and 70 core and affiliated residents and fellows. Department activities total approximately $55 million: $25 million annual clinical budget, $20 million research portfolio and $10 million annual department budget including teaching and self-supported programs. Under the leadership of the Interim Chair, the Department is currently undergoing significant strategic planning. This includes the management, strategic growth and improvement of four faculty practices focused on value-based care and innovative care models across Sports Medicine, Behavioral Health, and the Clinical Center for Integrative Medicine (CIM). In addition, advances are being made in the philanthropic development mission of the Department, which is comprised of three divisions, five centers, and approximately 15 programs.

At UC San Diego’s Department of Family Medicine, the vision for research is to be innovators and leaders learning health systems and practice-based research. The research mission is to improve health and health care through advancing, applying and disseminating knowledge. With funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), private foundations and UC San Diego, Family Medicine faculty lead research projects on patient-centered care, prevention, and health care professional well-being. They assess the true impact of educational efforts, examine how best to integrate research findings into clinics and practices, and critically examine how the care best results in optimal outcomes. They invite patients and research investigators to collaborate on designing projects that will have maximal impact on scientific and clinical communities, as well as patient populations.

The Department of Family Medicine continues the ongoing commitment to education at all levels of medicine. The Department’s deep commitment is demonstrated by the number of faculty involved in and leading educational opportunities, from medical student education to the practicing physician supporting robust residency and fellowship programs.

Under general supervision, the incumbent will work as a Health Services Researcher 3 in the Department of Family Medicine to collaborative publications and research design and procedures. The Health Services Researcher 3 uses advanced knowledge and skills in health services research and related scientific disciplines to make significant independent contributions to the development of the overall plan of approach to research questions, and performs a wide variety of networking tasks that require ingenuity, resourcefulness, and flexibility.

The incumbent will further be responsible for managing complex extramurally funded projects to include planning, implementation, and business development of new projects. Provides research project management to multiple research and evaluation studies and to program evaluation activities and health outcomes measurement.

In consultation with Study Directors, and operating with a high degree of independence, incumbent will manage or contribute to projects to complete all phases of research and evaluation studies, including study design, measures design, protocol development, HIPAA compliance, advanced data analysis, and manuscript/report preparation for clients and policy makers. Incumbent will keep detailed and organized records of site contacts, meeting notes, inventory needs, and other project-related metrics, as necessary. Assists with other projects/needs as requested.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced theoretical knowledge in health services research or related field as typically attained by a Bachelor's degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Advanced experience and knowledge of program evaluation and outcome measures.

  • Advance skill and proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software, including MS Office.

  • Demonstrated skill and experience in writing and editing material for grants, manuscripts, reports, and peer-reviewed scholarly publications.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing research projects and teams, and in making original contributions.

  • Ability to work in a busy environment in a timely, organized and effective manner with close attention to detail.

  • Excellent professional interpersonal communication skills working with diverse populations in person, in writing, and on the telephone.

  • Proficient in maintaining through files current, and confidential records according to research practices and protocols.

  • Advanced knowledge of R, STATA, SAS and/or other software packages for data analysis.

  • Demonstrated experience and excellent skill in data collection, management, and analysis.

  • Demonstrated experience performing electronic medline searches of scientific literature, using PubMed or equivalent.

  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a research team.

  • Verifiable demonstrated scientific writing skills and experience working within a research team.

  • Demonstrated experience in making significant independent contributions to research designs.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills, with ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.

  • Proven ability to develop reports and make oral presentations.

  • Demonstrated expertise to translate scientific language into easily understood concepts for widespread dissemination via reports and oral presentations.

  • Demonstrated ability to form working alliances and build rapport with other research professionals.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills including flexibility in order to work effectively with staff, administrators, colleagues, and consultants.

  • Strong demonstrated ability to make original contributions to research design and publication and experience working within a research team.

  • Demonstrated experience preparing written reports.

  • Demonstrated experience with large databases and advanced data management.

  • Advanced knowledge of assessment / outcome measurement.

  • Strong knowledge of Evidence-Based Practices.

  • Demonstrated experience with Performance Improvement Projects.

  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of learning health systems, outcomes analyses.

  • Extensive and comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge of health services delivery.

  • Proven skills to independently plan and organize research studies, troubleshoot, and analyze data from large health services delivery systems.

  • Demonstrated skill in advanced statistical analysis.

  • Advanced working knowledge of statistical software packages such as STATA or R including the ability to write syntax in statistical analyses software.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • In depth knowledge of health services delivery systems and program evaluation efforts.

  • Ability to communicate effectively (oral and written) in English.

  • A Master's or Ph.D. degree in health services research, sociology, or related field preferred.
