UCSD Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is growing in the diverse areas of professional educational programs, cutting-edge research, and pharmacy services. Research areas specific to this position posting are related to medication safety in the ambulatory care setting, practice-based research, collaborative practice, and a pharmacogenomics education program. Under supervision, the incumbent will assist in planning upcoming experiments including cell culture, transient transfections of yeast cells, Western blotting and responsible for implementing and performing a variety of new experimental protocols. Along with the molecular and cellular biological research, the incumbent will be responsible for the analysis and presentation of experimental data.
Theoretical knowledge and practical experience in molecular biology, cell culture, biochemistry, mathematics and computer software as typically attained by a Bachelors degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Extensive experience in a research laboratory and molecular biology techniques.
Demonstrated ability in laboratory organization and management.
Skills necessary to perform cell culture and transient transfections of mammalian cell lines.
Demonstrated ability to monitor viability of cell lines, freeze, thaw and culture using sterile techniques.
Skills necessary to transfect mammalian cells, purify plasmid DNA for transfections.
Knowledge of basic bacteriology, plasmid DNA amplification, molecular biology techniques.
Ability to oversee and instruct in a professional and constructive manner and to adapt to the demands of the diverse research projects in the laboratory.
Knowledge of computers and use of scientific software for data analysis.
Demonstrated ability to perform standard biochemical assays.
Skills necessary to perform calculation of experimental results.
- Knowledge of UC procedures for ordering, purchasing, shipping and inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Experience in handling radioisotopes.
- Knowledge of UC and EH&S laboratory safety procedures (particularly concerning radioactive material).
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
- Must be willing to work a hours some evenings and/or weekends, if necessary.
- Must be willing to work with hazardous materials.
