DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

Recreation is an integral part of UC San Diego, striving to achieve the same standards of excellence that exists within the university’s academic programs. Recreation programs serve more students than any other co-curricular program at UC San Diego and based on annual surveys, are a key component of student satisfaction with their overall UCSD experience. Providing a broad scope of high quality, dynamic recreational experiences that benefit students, staff, faculty and the University community and supporting a culture of Wellness at UCSD, major programs include Intramural Sports; Sports Clubs; Recreation Instructional Classes and camps; Special Events and Outdoor Education. Recreation manages all indoor and outdoor sports facilities on the UC San Diego campus that include RIMAC, Main Gym, Canyonview Aquatic Center, Spanos and all multi-purpose playing fields.. Working in close conjunction with Intercollegiate Athletics, student and staff organizations, and the community.Recreation provides maintenance, scheduling, retail and support services for special events that improve the quality of life on campus. Recreation has an annual operating budget of $17.5 million from various fund sources and employs 74 full time staff and over 800 students. Full time staff are both non represented and represented employees who span seven different union agreements.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Perform semi-skilled and skilled cleaning and general maintenance duties within Recreation facilities. Facilities include but not are not limited to RIMAC Arena, RIMAC Annex, Outback Adventures, Canyonview Aquatic Center, Spanos, Main Gym, and Outdoor fields and stadiums. Sweep, mop, finish, dust, vacuum, clean, polish and refinish floors and clean windows. Clean and disinfect restrooms, shower and/or locker rooms. Empty and clean wastebaskets, ashtrays and other waste receptacles, power wash, and any other duties related to maintaining the cleanliness of the Recreation facilities, inside and out. Must be able to operate equipment including but not limited to vacuum cleaners, floor scrubber, buffers, high pressure washer, carpet cleaning machines (shampoo, extract, pile lift), wet/dry vacuums, extractors, floor scrubbing and/or polishing machines during cleaning operations. Perform physical set-up of furniture and equipment (tables, chairs, staging, floor tiles) according to diagrams and instructions. Inspect equipment for quality and safety. Responsible for insuring the facility is secure at the end of the shift. Work with building occupants to answer questions regarding custodial or special set up services performed. Effectively work with campus customers and custodial team members to accomplish work with a high level of quality and efficiency. Build and maintain strong customer and team relations through a professional and helpful approach in handling customers’ needs and problems.

  • This is a multi-hire position. The current shift is Monday - Friday; 10:30 pm - 7:00 am.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience in operating, storing and maintaining the following equipment including but not limited to: vacuum cleaner, floor scrubber, buffers, high pressure washer, carpet cleaning machines (shampoo, extract, pile lift), wet/dry vacuums, extractors, floor scrubbing and/or polishing machines, scissor lift and electrostatic sprayers

  • Ability to read and interpret written information and instructions, including daily operations reports

  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing. Writing skills must be sufficient to fill out checklists and log books, to complete forms, and to communicate effectively with others as necessary.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and work with a diverse group of co-workers, students, staff, faculty and customers.

  • Ability to safely lift, carry, move, push and pull a minimum load of 50 lbs.

  • Must be able to safely operate vehicles (cart and pickup trucks).

  • Must be physically able to consistently perform job duties.

  • Must possess and maintain valid CA Driver's License

  • Experience implementing proper and safe chemical use and mixture. Knowledge of and experience using and testing environmentally safe and sustainable cleaning methods and green products. Ability to provide input and make suggestions to improve work methods and products.

  • Experience with disinfection, sanitation and cleaning methods required of public restrooms, and/or locker rooms

  • Must be flexible and able to effectively adjust to changing operational priorities requiring assignment of special projects and/or different area assignments as necessary. Ability to work independently and with diverse teams of people.

  • Customer service experience; work history demonstrates experience providing customer service and customer communication in a cleaning, housekeeping and/or general building maintenance environment.

  • Basic computer skills to check email, enter time and material data and to complete training and electronic records.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Will be required to hold valid driver's license and have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures.

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Must be able to safely lift, carry, move, push and pull a minimum load of 50 lbs.

  • Must be able to work Monday - Friday; 10:30 pm - 7:00 am.

  • Must be available to work occasional overtime with little or no advance notice.

  • Must be able to work onsite.

  • Must be able to work in all areas of Campus.

  • This position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in University of California - Policy CANRA.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $43,952 - $54,685 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $21.05 - $26.19

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
