Under direction of the Ships IT Manager, this position is responsible for managing the overall server cyberinfrastructure that supports the ships in the Scripps oceanographic research fleet. This includes overseeing management of the servers and services hosted on each ship, as well as directly managing systems at UC San Diego and in the cloud that provide shared services to the entire fleet. As needed, the Ships IT Server Administrator assists with other Scripps-led ship-based projects. The position performs in-depth analyses and implements solutions for highly complex issues in several technical areas:

Note that the responsibilities of this position are focused on Ships IT server infrastructure management, but expertise and occasional assistance with network infrastructure issues is required.

In collaboration with Scripps IT, SOMTS, and ITS staff, the position develops architecture reference designs to implement a shared cyberinfrastructure platform across all the Scripps ships. The Ships IT Server Administrator also meets with colleagues from other ship operators in the Academic Research Fleet (ARF) to design and deploy infrastructure services that support common needs of different institutions.

The Ships IT Server Administrator works from shore but will occasionally need to work irregular hours to resolve critical operations issues or assist with meeting shipyard, inspection and maintenance schedules for the ships in the Scripps fleet. Occasional opportunities for travel on the ships may be available.
