The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Second Officer to join our team.

As a Second Officer, you will play a critical role in the upkeep of our state-of-the-art research vessels, ensuring the safe and successful execution of scientific research expeditions around the world. You will work closely with our experienced crew, scientists, and researchers to provide expert navigation, safety guidance, and support for a wide range of research activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the navigation bridge, including charts, publications, and navigation equipment

  • Advise junior deck officers and direct seamen regarding duties on board ship

  • Provide safety guidance to scientific personnel on rigging, launching, and retrieving instruments at sea

  • Perform emergency and other duties as deemed necessary by a ship's Senior Officer

  • Recapitulate deck log book and fill out departure and arrival reports

QUALIFICATIONS

  • U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) Second Mate

  • Working knowledge of ship handling of ocean-going oceanographic vessel principles, including ship station keeping and frequent instrument package recovery.

  • Working knowledge of principles of watchstanding at sea and in port.

  • Working knowledge of electronic navigation and shiphandling techniques, including handling of mooring lines. Working knowledge of principles of maritime weather plotting and forecasting and voyage planning.

  • Basic ability to operate a variety of standard office software applications and common navigation and ship management software.

  • Ability to operate small craft and miscellaneous maintenance procedures.

  • Interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to diverse group of people.

  • Basic knowledge of fire and abandon ship drills.

  • Basic ability to supervise others under emergency situations.

  • Knowledge of pertinent US Coast Guard, American Bureau of Shipping regulations and Department of Transportation regulations for Chemical Drug and Alcohol testing.

  • Ability to obtain and hold USCG document, Radar Endorsement, FCC license, GMDSS, ECDIS, VPDSD, US Passport, STCW95 Certificate, CPR card and pass a physical with a company doctor.

  • Ability to act responsibly within the chain of command in the event of an emergency situation.

  • Knowledge and experience in the principles of marine navigation by celestial, electronic and radar piloting methods.

  • Ability to organize and maintain navigation stores and equipment publications, charts, inventories, Notice to Mariners corrections, etc.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • U.S. Coast Guard Second Mate Unlimited License with Radar Observer Endorsement.

  • Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) Radio Operator's License.

  • STCW95 Certificate U.S. Coast Guard Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW95).

  • U.S. Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

  • U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document (MMD) or Credential (MMC).

  • Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD).

  • Other endorsements may be required.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

  • Ability and willingness to go to sea for extended periods of time

  • Ability to pass physical examination and U.S. Coast Guard (DOT) regulations for Chemical Drug and Alcohol pre-employment screening and post-employment random testing

  • U.S. Passport

  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by Transportation Security Administration (TSA)

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $96,322 - $140,334 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $46.13 - $67.21

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
