DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Department of Radiology offers challenging career opportunities, cutting-edge research, and state-of-the-art services for clinical and translational studies.

The Center for Multimodal Imaging and Genetics (CMIG) is a multi-disciplinary group of scientists, programmers, and support staff that plays a leading role in several national and multinational initiatives involving collection and analysis of imaging, genetic, and behavioral data from healthy participants and patient populations.

CMIG serves as the data core for two large-scale longitudinal NIH funded studies with developmental populations. The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study follows ~12,000 children with longitudinal neuroanatomical, functional imaging, and behavioral assessments across 21 sites within the US. The major goals of the study are to provide a publicly available data resource to examine the relationships between environmental influences -- including substance use -- and adolescent brain and cognitive development. The Healthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study is a large-scale longitudinal study of the brain, cognitive, and emotional development that will follow mothers and their children from before birth through the first decade of life. The project will involve over 7,000 families at 25 sites across the United States and aims to better understand which harmful and protective environments exert the greatest impact on child development.

Reporting to the Associate Director for Data Science & Management, the REDCap/Airtable Developer will be an integral part of a team of research professionals supporting several large-scale research studies, especially the HBCD and ABCD studies. The incumbent will contribute to the creation and maintenance of data capture instruments (surveys and other data entry forms) in the electronic data capture system REDCap. Using their practical knowledge and experience with human subject research, especially large scale longitudinal studies with developmental populations, they will develop optimal data entry workflows to ensure secure, efficient, and reliable data collection for in-person and remote assessments as well as self-administered online surveys.

The incumbent will further contribute to the development of efficient and reproducible workflows for requesting and documenting data dictionary changes. For this and other administrative processes, they will design, develop, maintain, and improve Airtable bases, tables, and forms, e.g., to track participant characteristics, monitor study withdrawals, or manage study personnel. They will support the larger mission of the group by contributing to diverse projects aiming at controlling and improving the quality of data collection in multiple domains as well as the management and curation of the collected data for public data releases.

The successful candidate will respond to and resolve issues in a timely manner, communicate complex information to users of varying levels of technical expertise, demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Works on research data reporting assignments that are of moderate diversity in scope. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Four (4) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area.

  • Working knowledge of research function. Several years of practical experience with the collection and management of data from scientific research studies, especially longitudinal human research studies with developmental populations. Experience with data collection in different assessments domains, including standardized tests, psychological questionnaires, biospecimen collection, and neuroimaging.

  • Experience with the development, modification, and testing of data capture instruments in REDCap. Understanding of REDCap features like branching logic, calculated fields, validation rules, piping, field embedding, surveys, etc.

  • Practical experience in the use of REDCap for data capture and study management in large scale research projects.

  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing. Superior communication skills and proven ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner, both written and verbally. Experience working with academic and non-academic staff and users of diverse technical backgrounds and skills.

  • Working skills in analysis and consultation. Experience with using data to identify and analyze problems and derive evidence-driven decisions.

  • Working skills in statistical analysis, systems programming, database design and data security measures. Working knowledge of R, Python, and/or other programming languages for data manipulation.
