DESCRIPTION
The Multiscale Ocean Dynamics group at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography is seeking a Software Engineer at R&D Engineering 1 or 2 level. Utilizing professional software engineering concepts, the incumbent will be tasked with software engineering assignments and work in a specialized engineering field. Under general supervision, the incumbent shall participate in designing, implementing, and testing software for various scientific and research applications. These applications include real-time instrumentation acquisition systems, APIs to integrate data streams into isochronous packets using POSIX-style threads, and applications for host computers to store and visualize the real time data. The incumbent must be able to apply their knowledge of computer engineering and data structures to assist in writing software that will be deployed in the field and laboratory.
For this particular position, the selected candidate will, under general supervision:
-Assist project engineers in designing, implementing, unit testing, and debugging real-time data acquisition, processing, and visualization software for use by researchers and engineers in the field using C/C++, SWIFT, Python, and other languages.
-Participates in the design of integrated computer based instrumentation and data acquisition systems for measurements and remote sensing of oceanographic data.
-Participates in developing, designing, building, and unit testing of FPGA-based SONAR data acquisition systems.
-Assist in the maintenance, testing and deployment of off-the-shelf instrumentation and the development, fabrication and testing of novel oceanographic electronic and mechanical instrumentation systems in support of ocean physics research.
-Participates in the preparation and execution of both field expeditions and laboratory measurements.
-Participate with scientific personnel in data acquisition, quality control and archiving.
-Participate in the operation and development of web-based database systems
QUALIFICATIONS
Working knowledge of engineering principles and methods in order to independently perform professional engineering design work of limited scope and complexity.
Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the field. B.S. degree in computer engineering, computer science, or equivalent combination of course work.
Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.
Experience in C, C++, VHDL, SWIFT, MATLAB, PYTHON, etc.
Working knowledge and experience using embedded systems programming including, but not limited to, C/C++ for embedded systems.
Experience with ARM processors.
Experience with unit testing on software development.
Skill and experience utilizing Windows, Linux, macOS, and embedded systems.
Analytical and judgment skills to conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.
Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate and interact effectively with scientific, technical, and administrative personnel.
Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments. Analytical skills, and strong skills in attention to detail in implementing and documenting assignments.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers. Commitment to contributing to and supporting an inclusive and respectful work environment.
Ability to learn electronic and mechanical design, constructions, and wiring of new instrumentation.
Ability to learn soldering and populating electronic boards with electronic components.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- Per University of California policy PPSM 21-Appointment, this position has a background check requirement and offer of employment is contingent upon candidate clearing the background check process.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD security clearance as required.
- Must be willing and able to travel to foreign ports.
- Must have access to reliable transportation.
- Occasional evenings and weekends may be required. Occasional overtime and irregular hours.
- May spend from one to four months at sea each year in remote locations and under adverse weather conditions.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $59,700 - $124,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $28.59 - $59.53
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
