DESCRIPTION
The Public Safety Dispatcher will operate police radio, dispatch safety units, answer telephones, route calls and answer 911 calls. Monitor video/alarm systems for fire and security, and determine appropriate action. Operate SUN/CLETS/ARJIS computer with various software. Process lost and found items. Sort, perform data entry, distribute, and file reports. Answer and monitor emergency call boxes. Take crime reports. Maintain and update confidential information for alarms, keys, housing, and emergency notifications. Assist in the development and maintenance of police communications procedure manuals. Utilize video monitoring systems. Update electronic admin and criminal files.
All applicants will be required to pass a skills and abilities test for public safety dispatchers as specified by the California Commission on POST. The department will contact applicants via email to provide information on the required testing.
Must be able to obtain POST Dispatcher Certificate within 12 months of hire.
Must be available for on-call assignments, to work overtime, to work all shifts, and to work weekends and holidays.
QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated skill in processing multiple telephone calls quickly and politely. Skill in determining pertinent information and the ability to transmit that information to appropriate personnel.
Exceptional organizational skills in order to prioritize multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work in an environment of heavy pressures, constant interruptions, and changing priorities. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks and functions.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills to interact with a diverse population including faculty, staff, and students. Ability to serve and work well with citizens, peers, and management. Demonstrates a sincere interest in public service.
Proficient knowledge of computers, including those in a networked environment, with various software programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Access. Must be able to learn to use computer aided dispatch.
Demonstrated ability to write, applying the knowledge of basic grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Skill in completion and proper handling of forms, reports, and logs.
Proven ability to demonstrate sound judgment and exercise discretion in all circumstances. Ability to maintain complete confidentiality.
Ability to comply respectfully with instruction and counsel from supervisors. Ability to be loyal to supervision and management and ability to demonstrate that loyalty to subordinates and peers.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Background investigation required, including fingerprints, medical, drug and psychological examinations.
Must have a valid California Driver License.
Must be able to obtain POST Dispatcher Certificate within 12 months of hire.
Must have a workable telephone.
Must meet CANRA compliance requirement per "California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act ("CANRA," Penal Code sections 11164-11174.4)".
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $76,525 - $97,635 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $36.65 - $46.76
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
