Under general supervision, the Principal Hazardous Materials Technician is responsible for the collection of hazardous waste chemicals, biohazardous and radioactive materials from university labs and facilities. The incumbent processes hazardous waste materials including: analyses, segregation, compaction, vial crushing, solidification, recycling/reuse, lab-packing, consolidation, biohazardous, storage for radioactive decay, marking and labeling shipping containers and preparation of shipping documents and transportation. Manages the radioactive, chemical and biohazardous materials inventories, reporting, maintaining appropriate records and database management.
Provides technical direction and provides technical information to EH&S Technicians and EH&S Senior Technicians in the performance of the above. Coordinates shipments with waste transporters, disposal sites and TSD Treatment Facilities. Provides assistance to university faculty, researchers, staff and private contractors in solving problems in matters of accumulation, packaging, storage, labeling and disposal of hazardous chemicals, biohazardous and radioactive waste. Responds to hazardous spills and chemical emergencies. Assists with hazardous materials clean up. Performs work direction for students in their functions at the Environmental Management Facility, including, but not limited to collections, fumehood, eyewash and douse shower surveys, and facility cleaning.

Graduation from high school or a GED and four (4) years of experience in an environmental health and safety program, or two (2) years of college including appropriate science courses and three (3) years of experience in an environmental health and safety program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of manifest completion according to Land Disposal Restriction and Hazardous Waste profiles associated with shipping radioactive and hazardous wastes.
Knowledge of chemistry principles, chemical health and safety, analytical techniques, chemical compatibility, and spill cleanup procedures including the proper application of Personal Protective Equipment.
Proven knowledge of radiation physics principles, radiation health and safety and spill cleanup procedures including the application of proper Personal Protective Equipment.
Experience working with federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations regarding the management, handling and transportation of hazardous waste including chemical, radiological, mixed, and medical waste.
Knowledge of mechanical systems and monitoring systems and ability to perform routine maintenance and calibration procedures on pumps, compactors, crushers, meters at the Environmental Management Facility (EMF). Sound understanding of how the various utility systems at the EMF interrelate, such as ventilation, electrical systems, etc.
Proven ability to operate safely all equipment at the EMF including trucks and lift gates, forklift, hand trucks, pallet jacks, carts and other lifting aids. Demonstrated ability to safely drive, park, and navigate large box trucks around congested campus and city streets while transporting hazardous waste.
Ability to complete basic functions on computer terminal, including data entry, database queries, word processing, spread sheet design and manipulation, flow chart design, and word processing.
Ability to handle routine administrative matters without close supervision. Ability to organize and complete complex tasks and meet deadlines, define and resolve problems through flowcharting and other means, prioritize tasks, and attend to the details of each task.
Solid verbal communication skills necessary to effectively to recommend hazardous waste disposal and relate technical information to a diverse clientele. Professional and gracious telephone manner and demonstrated good customer service skills.
Solid writing and reading skills. Ability to use writing skills to effectively communicate technical information to a diverse clientele.
DOJ/FBI background clearances required prior to hire.
Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver License. Must obtain a Class C-Hazardous Materials endorsement (must pass exam within 90 days of employment).
Must complete accredited hazardous materials management curriculum to meet the HAZWOPER requirements within 90 days of employment.
Must pass a medical examination and be cleared to perform physical requirements and wear respirators, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus and personal protective clothing.
Must be willing to respond to hazardous materials spills and perform clean up.
