The Physician Assistant (PA) is a member of the interdisciplinary team providing advanced glycemic management skills, primarily in the outpatient setting, but also coordinating inpatient admission and discharge of patients known and new to the outpatient diabetes service. The PA provides advanced clinical expertise in the area of diabetes, managing complicated patients with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes, by developing effective individualized treatment plans that address current complications of diabetes and psychosocial barriers to glycemic control in order to promote patient adherence and prevent further complication.

CDE/ CDCES is preferred, providing support, education, and continuity of care to individuals and groups with type 1, type 2, pre-diabetes and pregnancy complicated by diabetes. Provides general education to healthcare staff and faculty and must be able to manage clinic support staff while working effectively and autonomously when an attending is not present in clinic, as well as effectively communicate remotely with attending when consult is necessary.

  • Must be a graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

  • Current State of California Physician Assistant (PA) license.

  • Current Physician Assistant Certification from NCCPA.

  • BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Minimum one (1) year of experience caring for patients with diabetes as a licensed Physician Assistant. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years.

  • Ability to effectively help participants change and maintain dietary and other lifestyle behaviors.

  • Proven knowledge of common diagnostic tests, exams, procedures used in adult medicine including purpose, supplies and/or equipment needed, how to perform test, exam and/or procedure accurately, infection control mechanisms and recording in medical record.

  • Excellent assessment skills and ability to make clinically sound decisions in a fast paced environment.

  • Proven experience teaching small groups nutrition and diabetes education and interfacing with community groups.

  • Experience in group nutritional and diabetes counseling and education. Strong skills in assessing, designing, implementing, and evaluating the nutritional, lifestyle, and educational needs participants.

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to interact positively and effectively with professional and nonprofessional staff, patients, study participants, families, and community support groups.

  • Proficient computer experience using Electronic Medical Records, databases, word processing and spreadsheet.

  • Identifies patient/family problems or learning barriers including physical, cognitive, environmental, language/cultural, financial, psychosocial, and spiritual and provides appropriate referral as necessary to function as part of a team.

  • Comfortable in a group teaching setting and willingness to do community outreach.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify when a patient’s needs are outside the scope of your practice and expertise and arranges for additional services to meet needs.

  • Ability to work with adult patients of various ages and backgrounds (socioeconomic, cultural, cognitive, etc.).


  • Certification with the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators as Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE/CDCES).
  • Three (3) years of experience caring for patients with diabetes.


  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment, a fee is required to be paid by applicant.
  • Must be willing and able to work a variable schedule depending on clinical operations and needs.
  • Must be willing to travel to off-site locations and have access to reliable transportation.
