DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Advanced Practice Practitioner Supervisor and physicians, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide patient care in the support of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department. Contributes to physician and team effectiveness by identifying short term and long term range patient care issues. Assesses patient health and performs medical assessment and physical evaluation in the inpatient and outpatient settings and communicates with supervising physician(s). Incumbent documents patient care services, orders therapeutics, diagnostic testing, and other services as required. Provides patient education and patient triage and manages patient forms and inquiries. Incumbent assists with clinical research protocols and data collection and functions as a liaison with health systems personnel including case management coordinators, financial counselors and social workers. Incumbent may assist with surgical cases and completes other duties as assigned.

This position is focused on sports medicine (sports and upper extremity injuries). Depending on experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the NP 1 or NP 2 level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.

  • California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification.

  • National NP board certification in aligned specialty with the practice area.

  • Must possess current BLS/CPR certification at the time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, therapeutics, including pharmacology, counseling techniques and interpersonal dynamics.

  • Knowledge of common orthopaedic problems and treatments.

  • Skill in telephone interviewing of patients to efficiently retrieve accurate information.

  • Ability perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems (specializing in sports medicine and hand evaluations), and formulate appropriate plans of action.

  • Strong knowledge of established protocols and ability to establish new protocols as needed.

  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.

  • Proven knowledge of common diagnostic tests, exams, and procedures used in clinic. Must understand purpose, required supplies and/or equipment, how to perform procedure accurately, infection control, an accurate documentation of medical chart.

  • Skills necessary to function as first assistant in operative procedures, and knowledge of operating room standards and techniques.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel, and skill at providing clear written, verbal and telephone communication with a wide variety of people.

  • Ability to assess the daily status and progress of patients and report this effectively to the physician and other medical care personnel associated with the patient.

  • Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in-charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team.

  • Knowledge necessary for instructing housestaff, medical students, physicians, nurses and other medical personnel in all aspects of acute and chronic care.

  • Knowledge of applicable research protocols and the ability to manage all aspects of each protocol.

  • Knowledge of medical ethics and law practices, pertaining to medical and medical socioeconomics.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of orthopedic rotation (if new grad) or previous orthopedic experience.
  • Experience working in an academic medical center environment/team.
  • Sports medicine experience.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be willing to work flexible, variable hours with the ability to change schedule on short notice.
  • May require occasional evening and weekend hours beyond the normal workday.
  • Must be willing to be flexible regarding work site within San Diego County.
  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment.
  • Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.
  • Current University of California NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval by Health Human Resources and the UCSD Advanced Practice Council.
