DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences strives to provide excellent clinical care to women while conducting cutting-edge basic, translational, and clinical research in reproductive health.

The Staff Research Associate will participate in an integrated research team focused on cutting edge research related to how the vaginal microbiome interacts with its host to produce outcomes of health and disease. The Staff Research Associate will independently design and carry out preclinical studies employing mouse infection/inoculation models. Apply existing skills to make important contributions to the experimental mouse models component of our research team. Work with mouse handling and basic routes of administration; willingness to learn new routes of administration and procedures. Projects may involve timed mating, genotyping, establishment/phenotyping of transgenic lines, histology. Manage in microbiology/microbiome protocols and analysis, molecular biology (bacterial genetics, qRT-PCR, plasmid construction, RNAseq etc), biochemistry (chromatography, enzyme assays, heterologous protein expression etc), flow cytometry.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge of general biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology, or related field as typically attained through a Bachelor’s degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Strong experience working with a variety of laboratory equipment, including but not limited to equipment used with animals.

  • Willingness to perform (and at least five (5) years of experience in) experiments involving the handling, dissection, and sacrifice of laboratory mice. Ability to work with recombinant DNA, biohazardous and infectious materials, and toxic chemicals.

  • Demonstrated strong success and skill at researching, analyzing and evaluating information for preparation of grant proposals, manuscripts, and communications.

  • Proven ability to work independently and in collaboration with the Principal Investigator on research projects, organize, prioritize, and meet critical deadlines for multiple on-going research and development projects.

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety including radioactive/biohazard handling and disposal techniques, and the ability to ensure laboratory compliance with required safety regulations.

  • Demonstrated experience with growing cells and cells in culture using sterile/asceptic techniques.

  • Strong experience with DNA isolation, PCR and gel electrophoresis (required)., DNA digestion by restriction enzymes, ligation, plasmid transformation in bacteria, quantitative real time PCR, RNA isolation, cDNA preparation, Sanger sequencing, additional sophisticated molecular biology tools (any of these skills a plus).

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to be effective in communicating and interacting with a variety of people within a large laboratory setting and in administrative components within and outside the University.

  • Knowledge of molecular biology, recombinant DNA and occasionally with toxic materials and radioactive isotopes.

  • Strong computer skills and experience with basic software packages including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (required). Experience with and/or willingness to learn graphing programs, drawing programs, and other bioinformatics or statistical analysis software would be a plus.

  • Proven ability to handle, inject, euthanize, and collect tissues from mice.

  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining well-organized lab and thorough records. Basic math skills and ability to handle accounting and billing practices.

  • Ability to work with tissue culture cells under sterile conditions.

  • Proven knowledge of small animal surgery and anatomy, mouse husbandry, and reproductive functions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated superior oral and written communication skills to communicate research results and carry out collaborative projects
  • Experience or knowledge in other core approaches/areas of the lab, such as molecular biology (especially qPCR), biochemistry (especially chromatography), reproductive biology, or carbohydrate biology.
  • Graduate degree or Bachelor's degree with at least 5 years of experience in research.
  • Five (5) years of experience with mice.
  • Experience with accounting practices for controlled substances.
  • Experience with management of an IACUC protocol.
  • Experience with and/or willingness to learn graphing programs, drawing programs, and other bioinformatics or statistical analysis software would be a plus.
  • Experience or knowledge in other core approaches/areas of the lab, such as molecular biology (especially qPCR), biochemistry (especially chromatography), reproductive biology, or carbohydrate biology.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Must be willing to work in an environment where hazards are present, including biological (including infectious agents and bloodborne pathogens), chemical hazards, and in which there may be exposure to animal allergens and willingness to perform mouse research. Work occurs in an environment with scientific discussions of a sexual nature.
  • Must be willing to undergo DEA background check and perform record keeping and administration of controlled substances in animals as needed. Must also be willing and able to interact with the PI and other lab members within close proximity (less than 6 ft) to receive training in lab specific practices, protocols, and research.

Job offer is contingent on successful engagement in the UC COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral).
