This position will be hired at the Staff Research Associate 2 or Staff Research Associate 3 level depending on experience of the selected candidate.


The UCSD Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences strives to provide excellent clinical care to women while conducting cutting-edge basic, translational, and clinical research in reproductive health.

Under supervision of the PI, the Staff Research Associate will participate in an integrated research team focused on cutting edge research related to roles of the vaginal microbiome and carbohydrate biology in women’s health. The Staff Research Associate will maintain and update the Lab’s IACUC protocol and independently carry out preclinical studies employing mouse infection/inoculation models. The successful candidate will be trained in mouse models of vaginal and urinary exposures and will carry out research to understand the roles of the vaginal microbiota and specific vaginal bacteria in human health and disease.

This successful candidate will assist with other lab duties such as ordering and receiving, maintaining lab protocols for biological and chemical safety and animals, routine equipment maintenance. Work with mouse handling and basic routes of administration. Manage colony timed mating, genotyping, establishment/phenotyping of transgenic lines, histology. Prior experience and/or willingness to learn microbiology/microbiome, molecular biology (bacterial genetics, qRT-PCR, plasmid construction etc), biochemistry (chromatography, enzyme assays, etc), or flow cytometry would be valuable. We also welcome any IT talent!


  • Theoretical knowledge of general biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology, or related field as typically attained through a Bachelor’s degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Strong experience working with a variety of laboratory equipment, including but not limited to equipment used with animals.

  • Willingness to perform experiments involving the handling, dissection, and sacrifice of laboratory mice. Willingness and ability to work with recombinant DNA, biohazardous and infectious materials, and toxic chemicals.

  • Demonstrated experience with DNA isolation, PCR and gel electrophoresis.

  • Thorough knowledge of small animal surgery and anatomy, mouse husbandry, and reproductive functions.

  • Ability to handle, inject, euthanize, and collect tissues from mice.

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety including biohazard handling and disposal techniques, and the ability to ensure laboratory compliance with required safety regulations.

  • Proven experience with growing cells and cells in culture using sterile/asceptic technique.

  • Superior oral and written communication skills to communicate research results and carry out collaborative projects

  • Good interpersonal skills to be effective in communicating and interacting with a variety of people within a large laboratory setting and in administrative components within and outside the University.

  • Familiarity with molecular biology, recombinant DNA and occasionally with toxic materials and radioactive isotopes.

  • Proficient computer skills and experience with basic software packages including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining well-organized lab and thorough records. Basic math skills and ability to handle accounting and billing practices.

  • Ability to work with tissue culture cells under sterile conditions.


  • Graduate degree or Bachelor's degree with at least five (5) years of experience in research.
  • Experience with DNA digestion by restriction enzymes, ligation, plasmid transformation in bacteria, quantitative real time PCR, RNA isolation, cDNA preparation, Sanger sequencing, additional sophisticated molecular biology tools.
  • Experience or knowledge in other core approaches/areas of the lab, such as molecular biology (especially qPCR), biochemistry (especially chromatography), reproductive biology, or carbohydrate biology.
  • Five (5) years of experience with mice.
  • Experience with accounting practices for controlled substances.
  • Experience with management of an IACUC protocol.
  • Experience with and/or willingness to learn graphing programs, drawing programs, and other bioinformatics or statistical analysis software.


  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Must be willing to work in an environment where hazards are present, including biological (including infectious agents and bloodborne pathogens), chemical hazards, and in which there may be exposure to animal allergens and willingness to perform mouse research. Work occurs in an environment with scientific discussions of a sexual nature.
  • Must be willing to undergo DEA background check and perform record keeping and administration of controlled substances in animals as needed.
  • Must also be willing and able to interact with the PI and other lab members within close proximity (less than 6 ft) to receive training in lab specific practices, protocols, and research.
