Department Overview:

The mission of the The Halicioglu Data Science Institute (HDSI) is to lay the groundwork for the scientific foundations of the emerging discipline of data science, develop new methods and infrastructure, and train students, faculty and industry partners to use data science in ways that will allow them to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems.

HDSI has been established as an independent and innovative academic unit that works collaboratively with schools, divisions, departments, centers, students and faculty across multiple disciplines throughout the entire campus. HDSI has 16.5 Faculty FTE on board, through a headcount of more than 40 faculty with split appointments in multiple departments. This highly talented data-driven ecosystem of thought leaders is only expected to grow in the coming years.

HDSI is the administrative home for the undergraduate B.S. major and minor in Data Science, and three new graduate programs; Master of Data Science Online, MS in Data Science and PhD in Data Science. The undergraduate program has 1,000+ students across our major and minor programs, and is expected to grow to 2,100 next year. Our newly launched graduate programs are on track to have 100 graduate students (PhD and MS) in the upcoming academic year (2022-2023).

Position Overview:

Under general supervision of the Graduate Program Manager, the incumbent is independently responsible for Master's Academic Advising, providing guidance in the administration all matters pertaining to admissions of Master's and Bachelor’s/Master's Student Programs. Duties include monitoring and advising academic progress of HDSI Master's students, analyzing policy changes impacting HDSI programs. The incumbent is also responsible for providing programmatic and academic advising to prospective Master's students with matters related to admissions into the department’s Master's programs (Master's and Online Master's). This process includes: working closely with the Master's Admissions Committee, responding to inquiries related to various graduate programs offered, areas of faculty interest/research, and admission requirements. The incumbent manages the departmental admission database, assists in developing admission review tools, and provides statistical data and analyses as requested.

The Master's Program Advisor participates in the administration of Master's student outreach and enrichment programs, and is involved in all other aspects of business pertaining to Master's Student Affairs, such as training and directing student assistants in daily activities related to Master's programs, and assisting with the annual Master's Student Orientation.

  1. Theoretical and practical knowledge in policies and procedures relating to graduate students, including managing curriculum administration, advising students, faculty, administrators and others about academic policies and requirements, and to implement the department’s goals and objectives.

  2. Ability to organize and analyze needs related to work situation and to develop programs, write informational brochures, and make recommendations based on evaluations.

  3. Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases.

  4. Skill in dealing with students in crisis in a professional and concerned manner. Ability to deal with exceptions and skill at devising viable alternatives.

  5. Ability to interact with and clarify procedures for faculty by means of collecting research, and development and management of new policies as needed.

Pay Transparency Act Full Salary Range: $37,900 - $85,300 Annually

The University of California, San Diego is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Expected Pay Scale. Placement within the Expected Pay Scale is determined by internal equity, relevant qualifications, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
