DESCRIPTION

A working leader of Landscape Services' Automotive Shop, the Lead Automotive Mechanic will set priorities for the repair of work equipment and assigns duties to shop staff. The incumbent will schedule, coordinate and maintain equipment for all of the Landscape Shop, Equipment Operators, and other campus customers. Additionally, the Lead Automotive Mechanic will maintain, repair and make major/minor engine overhauls of power equipment used in landscape maintenance. The incumbent will also instruct and explain procedures to shop staff and train new mechanics and equipment operators in the proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Maintain preventive maintenance schedule and small parts inventory.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Extensive knowledge and experience maintaining, repairing and overhauling engines of major and minor power equipment.

  • Understanding of mechanical concepts in the area of hydraulics, electrical belts and pulleys, P.T.O.'s, gasoline and diesel engines, air and water-cooled engines.

  • Excellent ability diagnosing cause of equipment breakdown and ability to estimate costs and recommend needed repairs.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures and operations for major and minor overhaul of landscape equipment.

  • Proven ability to provide effective leadership, training and assistance to shop staff and other Landscape Services personnel. Demonstrated experience planning and scheduling work activities for shop. Ability to effectively arrange and relate workload and resources to meet desired results.

  • Proven knowledge of landscape services related power machinery and sufficient skill to operate machines in a safe and efficient manner over a wide range of situations and terrain under minimal supervision.

  • Solid understanding of CAL-OSHA and departmental safety standards related to maintenance and operation of equipment.

  • Proven ability to operate trenchers, tractors, roto-tillers and other commonly used large pieces of power driven landscape services equipment.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and sound judgement. Proven ability to implement general landscape maintenance procedures with minimal supervision.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas and information verbally, in writing and electronically in a clear and concise manner.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • DOJ/FBI and DMV background checks and clearances required prior to hire.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver License and participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program.

  • Class B License requirement: Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver License with Air Brake Endorsement with a valid Medical Examiners Certificate preferred prior to employment or must obtain within first six months of employment start date and must be maintained throughout employment. Incumbents must participate in UCSD’s random drug testing program as required by the California Dept. of Transportation.

  • Must have the physical ability to perform essential duties and to work with and around noise related to landscape maintenance equipment.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $56,251 - $81,202 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $26.94 - $38.89

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
