DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, perform at the operational level of pest control work in the care of landscaped areas and related facilities. Job functions include but not limited to: identify and eradicate noxious animals, insects, plant diseases, and weed conditions for campus grounds.

Select and mix sprays and chemicals and determine where to spray or place chemicals or traps, requiring a thorough knowledge of the areas to be treated, the characteristics and effects of a variety of poisons and sprays, and the living habits of the pests to be exterminated.

Spray ornamental plants for pests and apply fungicides where needed; may apply various types of herbicides to roads, walks, lawns, etc., to control weeds; treat water areas for control of algae and mosquitoes; trap noxious animals such as rats and mice; may be called on to recapture animals escaped from animal quarters; maintain up-to- date knowledge of a wide variety of chemical agents and control techniques; may be responsible for ordering, preparing and storing chemicals used in pest control; and maintain pest control equipment.

  • May be required to work overtime as operationally necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of experience in Landscape and pest control work (must acquire license in pest control work by the California Department of Pesticide Regulations WITHIN 1 YEAR OF EMPLOYMENT) ; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

  • Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic/numerical calculations; skill to calibrate spray equipment.

  • Demonstrated experience maintaining plant material; solid understanding of their cultural requirements, pests and diseases; ability to identify undesirable plant material.

  • Experience in pest control to identify Landscape pest infestations in early stages.

  • Experience and knowledge using appropriate Landscape IPM (Integrated Pest Management) control methods per species, environmental conditions, and situations.

  • Knowledge of pest control laws and regulations regarding chemical application. Knowledge of toxic chemicals.

  • Skill to mix, load and apply category I, II, and III pesticides.

  • Knowledge to interpret and understand labels and MSD. Skill with mechanical equipment to know how to start and check for possible problems prior to starting. Mechanical knowledge to avoid damage to the equipment.

  • Experience safely operating pest control equipment and tools. Skill to perform tasks using excellent safety practices.

  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact effectively with all levels of management, clients, regulators, contractors, craft workers, public and peers. Ability to interact in a positive manner within a multi-cultural environment.

  • Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities and ability to follow through and carry out assignments.

  • Ability to understand and carry-out verbal and written instructions; problem solving skills and sound judgment.

  • Ability to perform heavy and physically demanding work for lengthy and continuous periods of time.

  • Computer skills to manage work assignments, track schedules, check email, enter time and material data, complete and maintain records, prepare technical reports and write correspondence.

  • Skill to handle emergency situations, with knowledge of appropriate emergency departments and how to contact them.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must acquire license in pest control work by the California Department of Pesticide Regulations WITHIN 1 YEAR OF EMPLOYMENT: Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC). Higher license preferred.

  • DOJ/FBI background check clearances required prior to employment. DMV driving record check clearance prior to employment.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver License.

  • Position will participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program.

  • Must be physically able to perform all essential functions.

  • This position is subject to completion of a pre-placement medical exam provided by Employee Health Services, given at no charge to the applicant.

  • Will walk, lift, stoop, push and bend. Ability to carry a back pack sprayer weighing up to 25 pounds on the back. Must be able to maneuver 80 lbs. bags and containers on carts with additional help (2 or more people). Ability to wear a full-face air-purifying respirator and protective clothing for up to thirty minute intervals. May require use of respirator and protective clothing. Work is performed outdoors in extreme weather, and in dusty, dirty, smelly, noisy conditions.

  • Must be able to work alone.

  • Ability to work in areas of constant noise and loud noise. May be subject to work in extreme weather conditions including dusty, heat and moisture.

  • Required to wear clean uniform and appropriate footwear.

  • This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.

  • This position may, at times, require the individual to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards include but are not limited to: asbestos, PCB's radioactive materials, industrial and laboratory chemicals, fuels, solvents, infectious materials and wastes, biological hazards and other materials labeled hazardous.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $46,270 - $67,359 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $22.16 - $32.26

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
