This is a 100% limited position beginning in June 2024 for up to one (1) year with the possibility of a short extension through July 2025.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Marine Biology Research Division at Scripps Institution of Oceanography houses approximately 20 research laboratories studying all aspects of the biology of marine organisms. Fields of study range from cell and developmental biology to ecology and evolutionary biology; organisms of interest range from bacteria and viruses to sharks and whales.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, perform standard repetitive laboratory experimental procedures. Assist with care, feeding, and breeding of adult and larval amphioxus, setting up a variety of feeding and temperature regimes, raising embryos and larvae, making algal media, maintaining algal cultures, data collection, ordering supplies and maintaining accurate records.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school and minimum two (2) years of college coursework, including developmental biology/embryology, general chemistry and genetics, or two (2) years laboratory experience involving these subjects, or equivalent combination of coursework and experience.

  • College-level knowledge of embryology and genetics.

  • Knowledge of and experience in general lab protocols.

  • Experience making algal media and maintaining algal cultures.

  • Demonstrated experience in care and feeding of marine invertebrates and/or fish.

  • Experience raising marine larvae.

  • Experience in data collection.

  • Experience using personal computer (PC preferred) as well as spreadsheet and word processing software such as Word and Excel.

  • Ability to accurately maintain lab records with strict attention to detail.

  • Experience with use of pipets, analytical balances, dissecting and compound microscopes.

  • Experience in ordering supplies.

  • Skill to use hand and power tools for setting up aquaria and algal cultures.

  • Knowledge of basic laboratory safety requirements and procedures, and ability to maintain up-to-date safety training certification.

  • Ability to interact effectively, using tact and diplomacy, with diverse personalities including academics, staff, student employees, and outside vendors.

  • Experience with amphioxus aquaculture preferred but not required.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work occasional weekends, evenings and holidays as needed.

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $44,662 - $52,513 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $21.39 - $25.15

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
