DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The School of Biological Sciences is comprised of four academic departments, Cell and Developmental Biology, Ecology Behavior and Evolution, Molecular Biology, and Neurobiology, which reflect broad foci in faculty research and in the academic programs offered by the School. Each department is headed by a Chair who works individually to represent their department, and works collaboratively as a member of the School’s Council of Chairs (CoC) on those school concerns which cross the boundaries of section governance. The School has over 100 faculty FTE and approximately 5000 undergraduate students in 8 majors, with annual enrollments of approximately 30,000.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under supervision of the PI and senior lab personnel, the Lab Assistant 2 will aid in a variety of laboratory responsibilities. These include, but are not limited to, laboratory equipment and space maintenance and cleaning, routine tissue culture work, autoclaving, dishwashing, and making basic laboratory media and solutions. As needed, assist with performing general administration, lab safety and other projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school or a GED and two (2) years of laboratory experience OR two (2) years of college including courses in the biological sciences; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • College level course or equivalent in general laboratory techniques and molecular techniques including the ability to prepare solutions and use a pH meter

  • Knowledge/understanding of Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program, and Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items.

  • Experience with basic microbiological and sterile techniques.

  • Skill to use standard lab equipment such as centrifuge, microscope, balances, etc.

  • Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.

  • Knowledge of general inventory and skill in organizing lab supplies.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility with the ability and experience to work in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community with staff, faculty, students and visitors.

  • Experience and skill with Macintosh and PC standard business applications.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of matters related to work.

  • Ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work and maintain an established schedule of days/times. Must be willing and able to work with rodents as animal subjects, and to work with bio-hazardous materials.

  • Job offer contingent upon successful completion of a background check.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $44,662 - $52,513 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $21.39 - $25.15

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
