DESCRIPTION
The Department of Psychology (http://psy.ucsd.edu/) consistently ranks among the top experimental psychology programs in the country. Currently, there are 32 ladder-rank faculty, 11 research faculty, 30 staff and 70 graduate students. The department has over 50 active federal contracts/grants and gift funds. The annual expenditures total of $12 million across federal, state, and gift funds.
Under supervision, the Lab Assistant will be involved in research in the lab that is aimed at understanding the neural basis of natural behavior. Work in the lab combines studies of animal behavior with techniques for recording neural responses in cortex. This position is for a person who will primarily be involved in conducting behavioral research but also assist in the various logistical aspects of the laboratory management. The latter responsibilities may include overseeing the daily health and well being of the animal colony, training undergraduate students, surgical assistance and managing lab supplies. Those with experience and interest in animal behavior are well suited for this position. But the nature of the work requires that the employee also be comfortable with wet lab techniques.
Occasional overtime and weekends may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum two years of experience working in an animal laboratory.
Experience programming in Matlab.
Experience maintaining and generating a filing and record system.
Two years of College-level coursework in psychology, or in a related area
Interpersonal skills including appropriate interview techniques, diplomacy and confidentiality.
Excellent organizational, scheduling, and record keeping skills.
Experience interacting effectively with co-workers as well as subjects.
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Job offer is contingent upon a satisfactory clearance based on background check results.
Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18). Completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form is required.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $45,999 - $54,079 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $22.03 - $25.90
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
