As a member of the UC San Diego Library's Communications & Engagement (C&E) program, the Internal Communications Manager plays a key role in engaging and highlighting the contributions of Library employees. The position accomplishes this through partnerships with Library and campus colleagues to advance key Library initiatives through a variety of internal and external channels. In this role, the candidate will be primarily responsible for developing and implementing an internal communication and employee engagement strategy that is consistent and reflects the Library’s strategic vision and mission; keeping all Library employees well-informed about relevant Library and campus news and information; seeking input and feedback from Library employees on topics of importance to the Library; and facilitating the exchange of information among all Library programs and the Library Administration.

This position requires an experienced self-starter, storyteller and project manager who has demonstrated the ability to deliver compelling communications and creative ideas for informing and inspiring audiences across a variety of communication mediums. The candidate must have experience and a desire to foster strong relationships and collaborate with a range of internal stakeholders to develop strategies, shape messaging and curate content.

This position works with a high degree of autonomy with direction from the C&E Director to develop, implement, oversee and evaluate a comprehensive communications program for the UC San Diego Library.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to meet communication needs. Occasional mornings, evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Attendance, photography, social media coverage, and events support may be required at events, as assigned.


  • Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.

  • Proven ability to work with a high level of independence in a goal-driven, fast-paced environment; experience working on multiple projects simultaneously; experience setting and shifting priorities based on goals, timelines, and resources.

  • Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans. This includes defining goals, identifying target audiences and creating and implementing action plans and timelines.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills for a variety of formats and channels using correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, formatting, and proofreading skills to clearly and concisely provide accurate information. Ability to write under deadlines. Familiarity with AP writing style.

  • Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences. Strong experience independently identifying appropriate topics, subject matter, etc. that would appeal to the Library’s internal and external audiences. Demonstrated research skills to gather data for writing.

  • Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications. Includes, but not limited to MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Acrobat, and Slack (preferred). Experience with content management systems (CMS) / website development and management.
