DESCRIPTION

This is a key function in helping the university develop the technologies and talent that will drive new industries and the innovation workforce of the future.
Under the general direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Innovation & Commercialization, the incumbent will provide high-level intellectual property (IP) management through UC San Diego's patent, trademark, and copyright portfolio from disclosure to patent filing and sponsorship compliance. The incumbent will devise effective initiatives and exercise strong leadership to assist the Associate Vice Chancellor in accomplishing the goals and objectives of the university in driving social and economic prosperity in our region and across the nation.
The incumbent also determines appropriate strategies to maximize the value of the IP portfolio and manages the work process for all functions of the IP group, providing general operational oversight, training, and mentoring to the members of the group. The incumbent will participate in short- and long-range planning and development of best office practices and serve as a liaison to the UC Office of the President to ensure compliance, enforcement, and implementation of University-wide and campus patent policies. Extensive interaction is required with campus researchers, licensing professionals, licensees, sponsor representatives, and patent attorneys.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Three or more years of experience in the following:
~Managing and expanding an increasingly diverse portfolio of intellectual property with a demonstrated skill to maximize value and minimize risk to the University; includes analysis of cost/effectiveness of various protection strategies.
~Evaluating attorney billing practices from attorney firms, and particulars including basic accounting and valuation knowledge.
Thorough knowledge of and application of standard principles, theories, and concepts and techniques such as laws, regulations, and practices pertaining to the protection and management of intellectual property, university technology transfer, and general scientific and / or technical skills.
Individual must possess a technical background as evidenced by an advanced degree or equivalent work experience to understand the nature of inventions being patented, plus a good working knowledge of US patent prosecution (37CFR) and patent laws (35 USC). Knowledge of PCT process.
Practical experience in patent law and procedure, preferably patent agent registration or formal studies of patent law; able demonstrated experience in productive interactions with patent attorneys and PTO examiners; functional knowledge of copyright and trademark issues.
Prior experience supervising diverse staff functions responsible for providing analytical and administrative support relative to patent activities; initiate recruitment, selection, staff development, performance evaluation, and termination processes.
Ability to effectively coach, mentor and supervise employees. Effective supervision skills, including leadership ability to establish and maintain positive and productive goal-oriented working relationships.
Demonstrated skills in assessing the potential commercial value of academic inventions in a technology commercialization office of similar setting and understanding of the impact of such potential value on the scope of patent prosecution needed.
Demonstrated effective communication skills, both written and oral.
Proven ability to plan, organize, prioritize daily operations, short and long-term projects and engage in strategic planning exercises. Ability to evaluate available resources and adjust schedule and priorities to meet established deadlines and complete projects. Proven ability to work collaboratively with individuals and groups to incorporate ideas.
Proficiency in database, spreadsheets, word processing. Ability to determine information needed for creating customized reports for multiple constituencies and design supplemental systems with Information Services as necessary.
Ability to process proprietary information with the greatest care for confidentiality.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $87,000 - $202,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $41.67 - $97.03
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
