The candidate selected will be hired at either a Research and Development Engineer level 2 or Research and Development Engineer level 3 depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Hiring salary range for Research & Development Engineer 2: $77K-$108K/yr.

Hiring salary range for Research and Development Engineer 3: $85K-$121K/yr.

DESCRIPTION

UNDERSTANDING AND PROTECTING THE PLANET SINCE 1903

Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego is one of the most important centers for global earth science research and education in the world. Scripps scientists work to understand and protect the planet by investigating our oceans, Earth, and atmosphere to find solutions to our greatest environmental challenges.

Supporting SIO, Shipboard Technical Support (STS) provides specialized expertise, personnel, instrumentation and support services to scientists that use oceanographic research vessels. They also design, build and sell equipment and instruments that are not available on the commercial market. STS is composed of groups that each provide a distinct set of services and expertise. These services include technical services on SIO vessels, specialized services on vessels within the Academic Research Fleet, and technical services on the USCGC HEALY through the Ship-based Technical Support in the Arctic program. (STARC)

In coordination with the STS Specialized Services Manager and the STARC Arctic Coordinator this position provides engineering , operational, maintenance, and data quality support for oceanographic instrumentation on the USCGC HEALY. Examples include meteorological sensors, physical oceanography sensor, hydrographic sonars, and positioning systems. This position also provides engineering support for the department shipboard instrumentation and specialized geophysical groups.

At sea the position supports researchers with the use of shipboard instrumentation, data collection, and assists researchers with the use of their research equipment on the vessel. When not at sea this position conducts instrumentation maintenance, conducts planning for shipboard instrumentation needs of future projects and provides remote technical assistance to technical staff at sea.

Additionally, incumbent interacts with scientists in planning, organizing and carrying out major research expeditions insuring quality of service and support in accomplishment of the scientific mission.

QUALIFICATIONS

The Research & Development Engineer 2 is best suited for an intermediate professional who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments /projects /tasks of moderate scope and complexity; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. Demonstrates Working knowledge of engineering principles and methods in order to independently perform professional engineering design work of limited scope and complexity. Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments. Organizational abilities and decision making to prioritize work assignments.

The Research & Development Engineer 3 is best suited for an experienced professional who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems / issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. Demonstrates Thorough knowledge and experience with engineering principles and methods to independently perform the full range of engineering professional design work. Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations. Ability to lead and influence others.

Qualifications at the Research & Development Engineer level 2:

  • Working knowledge of engineering principles and methods in order to independently perform professional engineering design work of limited scope and complexity.

  • Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.

  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical and computer systems to identify and isolate problems.

  • Knowledge of the design, fabrication, testing and repair of complex electronic circuits.

  • Experience working with large instrumentation systems on research vessels, which includes safety aspects of operation.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers.

Qualifications at the Research & Development Engineer level 3

  • Thorough knowledge and experience with engineering principles and methods to independently perform the full range of engineering professional design work.

  • Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.

  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical and computer systems to identify and isolate problems.

  • Knowledge of the design, fabrication, testing and repair of complex electronic circuits.

  • Experience working with large instrumentation systems on research vessels, which includes safety aspects of operation.

  • Demonstrated ability to instruct users on use of analytical instrumentation.

  • Practical knowledge of the theory and operation of compressed air sound sources, including the installation and towing of arrays.

  • Experience with seismic and magnetic data acquisition systems.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • This position has recently been accreted by TX union and will be a part of that union moving forward.

  • Must be willing and able to spend up to four (4) months of the year at sea in one (1) to two (2) month increments.

  • Must be able to travel globally without restrictions.

  • U.S Passport Required

  • Must obtain a transportation worker identification credential (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration.

  • Must be able to obtain a Common Access Card for access to United States Coast Guard Facilities.

  • Must be capable of lifting and moving a min of 401bs of weight in port and at sea.

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Must be able to perform heavy physical labor and to work under adverse conditions while adhering to safety guidelines.

This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $85,400 - $156,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $40.90 - $75.10

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
