DESCRIPTION

Provides professional assistance to senior managers in the management of a comprehensive intellectual property program for the campus. Responsible for evaluating invention portfolios of life sciences, engineering and physical science inventions in various stages of development, tangible research materials, software and copyright materials developed at UC San Diego for their technical utility, commercial potential and available protection under federal and state statutes.

Using personal contacts and professional experience, targets potential licensees or other business partners, conducts preliminary negotiation of the terms and conditions for the transaction and drafts the necessary contract to complete the licensing of UC San Diego intellectual property rights for commercial development to benefit the public. Acts as a liaison to the faculty members in life sciences, engineering and physical science fields to assist faculty and research staff in crystallizing their inventive ideas and making disclosure of those inventions, tangible research materials, software and copyrightable materials to the university. Interacts extensively with campus researchers, potential licensees, patent and contract attorneys, industrial scientists, senior business development executives, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists.

Upon request, serves as a representative of the Office of Innovation & Commercialization (OIC) and UC San Diego campus at professional meetings, technology trade conferences and investment and economic development meetings and events. Participates in educational and service programs provided by OIC to the campus community related to intellectual property issues and awareness. Routinely handles confidential information including proprietary technical and commercial information that has great potential economic value and conflict of interest potential.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training, advanced degree preferred.

  • Thorough knowledge of and application of standard principles, theories, and concepts and techniques such as laws, regulations, and practices pertaining to the protection and management of intellectual property, university technology transfer, and general scientific and / or technical skills in subject matter area.

  • Ability to market technology to industrial partners; knowledge of contracts and grants preferred.

  • Familiarity with the process and ability to learn to negotiate preliminary license terms and conditions while maintaining the university's long-term relationship with industry.

  • Proven strong interpersonal skills to interact with a variety of stakeholders such as UCSD researchers and potential licensees from the industry.

  • Ability to visualize potential practical utilities of new discoveries and results of basic scientific investigations. Skills in bridging basic research and applied uses of its results.

  • Skills in technical writing, with experience in the drafting and reading legal language in various contracts and other documents.

  • Some experience with technology licensing as evidenced by involvement in negotiated contracts with established life/physical/engineering companies and startup companies.

  • Demonstrated working experience in either academic or industrial settings, or both.

  • Demonstrated good multi-tasking and program management skills to handle a full and growing portfolio of diverse UC San Diego innovations in life sciences, physical sciences and engineering with numerous varying technologies.

  • Savvy knowledge of databases and on-line resources to assess up-to-date market and company information.

  • Experience with common office computer programs.

  • Demonstrated skills in market research, partnering of, and valuation of technologies.

  • Working knowledge of basic scientific concepts and their commercial applications in life sciences or engineering and physical sciences.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $116,000 - $224,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $55.56 - $107.38

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
