DESCRIPTION

This position performs duties as an independent worker in a research laboratory studying cancer immunology and human immunology. Tasks will require critical thinking, generation of hypotheses, experimental design, ordering appropriate reagents, finding cost-efficient protocols, lab management, and execution of the experiment. Specific duties and responsibilities include FACS staining, acquisition, and analysis; handling human blood specimens; mouse husbandry and genotyping; purification of RNA and DNA; culturing cell lines; mouse tumor experiments; immunohistochemistry; ordering reagents; administrative duties to manage the lab. Position will require working knowledge of immunology and molecular and cellular biology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge of Immunology, Cancer Biology, Molecular Biology, General Chemistry or Genetics, or equivalent combination of education and experience including lab experience.

  • Knowledge of molecular biology techniques including genetic manipulation, transfection of tumor cells in tissue culture, molecular techniques to evaluate expression, localization and function of targeted molecules.

  • Ability to perform basic animal surgical procedures (prescribed by protocol).

  • Excellent organization skills and detail oriented to maintain mouse colony and accurate records.

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn harvesting tumor tissue from rodents.

  • Ability to maintain at least five tumor cell lines simultaneously in culture.

  • Knowledge of how immune cells and cytokines influence cancer cell progression.

  • Experience with general lab maintenance including cleaning, stocking supplies.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with strong, demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing. Possess skills of tact, poise, diplomacy, confidentiality and flexibility in a lab environment that interacts with a diverse group of research and technical personnel and other laboratories.

  • Solid computer skills using MS Word, Excel, Power point, email system, and a variety of web-based programs. Demonstrated ability to create and maintain databases, perform standard computer tasks, learn new programs/applications with minimal direction, and exercise fast and accurate typing skills. Demonstrated commitment to update/maintain technology skills with relevant computer software.

  • Knowledge of basic lab safety requirements/procedures; EH&S regulations and methods for handling, clean-up, and waste disposal for biohazardous materials.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a biomedical science field.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Must be able and willing to work with live rodents.

  • Must be available to work some weekends and evenings to complete experiments as needed.

  • Must be able and willing to work with human blood samples.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $56,564 - $90,995 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $27.09 - $43.58

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
