This is a temporary position.
Assignments typically last six (6) months or less.
Compensation: $23.14 - $27.02 per hour plus vacation, sick, and holiday pay. Typical hours will be: 7:00am - 3:30pm, Monday - Friday.

The University of California, San Diego, Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Hazardous Materials Technician works under close supervision of the Operations Supervisor and performs such duties as collection of hazardous waste chemicals, radioactive materials and biohazardous waste from university labs and facilities.

Performs processing of hazardous waste materials including: segregation, compaction, vial crushing, solidification, recycling/reuse, lab- packing, consolidation, storage for radioactive decay, marking and labeling shipping containers and preparation of shipping documents and transportation.

Performs fume hood, safety shower and eyewash tests and manages data from these tests as needed. Provides assistance to university faculty, researchers, staff and private contractors in matters of accumulation, packaging, storage, labeling and disposal of hazardous chemicals, and biohazardous waste.


  • Graduation from high school or a GED and one (1) year of experience in an environmental health and safety program, or two (2) years of college including appropriate science courses; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

  • Demonstrated ability to safely negotiate trucks around campus and city streets while transporting hazardous waste.

  • Ability to move or lift large chemical drums, carboys, bottles boxes etc.

  • Ability to safely operate all equipment at the EMF including trucks and lift gates, forklift, hand trucks, pallet jacks, carts and other lifting aids.

  • Ability to organize, work independently, exercising good judgement, take initiative, set priorities, meet deadlines and schedule tasks to complete projects effectively and efficiently with high attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Good oral communication skills necessary to effectively negotiate hazardous waste disposal and relate technical information to a diverse clientele. Professional and gracious telephone manner.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with all members of the Environmental Management Team, EH&S staff, Waste Generators and other members of the UC San Diego community.


  • Must have a valid California driver's license.

  • Must pass a medical examination and be cleared to perform physical requirements and wear respirators, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus and personal protective clothing.

  • Must be available for overtime call-back. Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, and overtime based on business needs. Typical hours will be: 7:00am - 3:30pm, Monday - Friday.

  • Must be willing to respond to hazardous materials spills and perform clean up.
