Depending on the experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the Financial Analyst or Senior Financial Analyst level.
Candidates hired into this position will work a hybrid work from home schedule that may change depending on COVID protocols.
The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the School of Medicine with approximately 250 Faculty, 127 postdoctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) along with over 320 support staff (not including hospital staff). In addition, the Department has 68 clinical residents distributed across the Divisions. The missions of research, education and patient care are intertwined, and are integral to the goals of the department.
The Department manages a university-affiliated children's health system with the physicians and leadership of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Rady Children's Hospital, and Rady Children's Specialists of San Diego, a Medical Practice Foundation, unifying pediatric patient care, research, education and community service programs.
The Financial Analyst serves as a key member of the department’s Business Office, working in a high-volume and fast-paced environment with changing priorities requiring tact, political acumen, diplomacy, and discretion, across a wide variety of complex and sensitive matters. This position is critical in supporting development of department financial plans and analysis of variances and performance results in support of the Pediatrics academic, clinical, research, and teaching missions.
The experienced analyst will also be responsible for performing accounting and financial reporting functions in accordance with generally acceptable accounting principles and UCSD policies. In addition, the senior analyst will oversee and manage service agreements with external entities, assist in general accounting and reporting over department and clinic activities, and prepare financial analyses and budgets, including faculty compensation. The incumbent will perform audit and analytical tasks, including variance analysis, fund management and reconciliation of ledger accounts. This position understands complexities of revenue and expense patterns and provides solutions to financial processes to maximize UC resources. The senior analyst may work on ad hoc projects as requested. The senior analyst will utilize advanced Excel and/or database skills to manage large amounts of data and will have working knowledge of ERP systems.
Working independently, this position exercises sound judgment within defined accounting procedures and practices to determine appropriate action. The analyst will have contact with internal and external resources, including sponsored research fund managers, outside institutions, Controller’s Office, General Accounting Office, and UCSD Health System.
Six (6) years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two (2) years of related experience/training. In order to be considered for a Senior Financial Analyst, would need seven years of related experience, or a Bachelor's degree and three years of experience.
Thorough knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems.
Ability to independently gather required information to organize, and perform financial analysis assignments. Must have the ability to identify issues; analyze data; develop, recommend, and implement, solutions; and convert data to actionable information and recommendations.
Proven ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner. Must be adept at presenting information in a tactful and diplomatic manner, clearly and concisely conveying technical information, both written and verbal, to a broad audience. Ability to act consistently in exercising independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.
Proven ability using spreadsheet and database software for complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports. Advanced experience with Microsoft Excel and ability to synthesize large amounts of data. Database skills preferred.
Strong service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. Proven ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment. Exceptional interpersonal and collaborative skills and ability to establish strong rapport and partnerships at all levels of the organization. Self-directed and able to work well and communicate effectively in a team environment. Hands on and able to work with minimal supervision.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
Analytical background as it pertains to identifying and effectively explaining financial drivers to finance and business leaders.
Strong understanding of general accepted accounting principles in non-profit and/or government entities.
Clear leadership and development potential.
Working knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems. Includes Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards (GAS), OMB A-21, University regulations, and guidelines of the Institute of Internal Auditors.
Experience and proficiency with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, such as Oracle
- Master's degree in accounting, finance, business administration or CPA.
- Proven ability with in-depth knowledge to utilize SQL and SQL Server databases, Tableau, Microsoft Excel, and other reporting software to analyze data and generate ad-hoc reports.
