DESCRIPTION

The Executive Director for Health Sciences Academic Administration is the primary line officer with oversight accountability for multiple academic and administrative mission-critical business areas. Direct reports include the administrative functions of five units that are included within: Academic Affairs, Faculty Affairs, Faculty Compensation, Academic Infrastructure, and the Academic Resource Center, a shared service for faculty, academics, physicians, and scholars in Health Sciences. The position is responsible for conceptualizing new ideas for business opportunities and developing a comprehensive business plan and implementation strategy. This is a highly visible, interactive, and inclusive position that requires direct and continuous interaction with leadership across all areas of the Health Sciences, as well as the Campus, Health, the University, and other organizations as required.

Participates with other higher-level managers to establish strategic plans and objectives. Makes decisions on operational matters and ensures achievement of objectives for a large college or operating unit with a direct impact on a major segment of the organization, or with significant multi-organizational or multi-institutional influence. Reviews and approves recommendations for operational planning and control. Erroneous decisions will have serious impact on the overall success of the department, division and / or the organization.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor’s degree in related area, plus eight (8) years of relevant experience; OR twelve (12) years of combined experience, education and training.

  • Excellent leadership abilities to oversee multiple functions or departments through subordinate managers.

  • Advanced knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll. Ability in analyzing and interpreting financial data and issues, recognizing potential impact, identifying alternative solutions, and making recommendations. In-depth knowledge of trends in academia, especially in areas of academic planning, human resource management, finance and administration

  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques. Strong political acumen skills and ability to apply in diverse, complex organization. Ability to handle highly sensitive, confidential and/or privileged information and issues. Ability to interact diplomatically with diverse personalities and to exercise judgment and tact in interactions with leadership, faculty, staff, students, and the public. Ability to resolve conflicts with creativity and authority while maintaining a professional relationship

  • Skills in establishing and implementing customer service standards. Excellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals which measure effectiveness of contributions to efficient operations of department. Demonstrated ability to develop a wide range of qualified data as the basis for formulating recommendations to resolve issues.

  • Strong knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.

  • Advanced project management skills, including the capability to manage capital projects. Ability to identify, develop and prioritize objectives. Experience in business/financial management and new program development.

  • Thorough knowledge of administrative management theory and ability to translate this knowledge into practice. Strong leadership and management skills including developing objectives, policies and programs, budgeting, organizational management and supervising. Experience in financial analysis, determination of financial feasibility, organizational risk and implementation of creative solutions to problems.

  • Proven skills in strategy development, systems planning and change management. Proven ability to clearly and accurately express substance and nuance in both oral and written communications with a demonstrated ability to conceptualize, analyze, and interpret issues, practices, and policies. Excellent problem solving skills. Demonstrated critical and innovative thinking

  • Experience working with senior officials and executives from within and outside the University, and ability to think strategically and serve as a sounding board for executive managers. Proven experience in research and preparing executive level documents, reports, and summaries.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters or advanced degree in business, finance or related field of study preferred.
  • Experience in a large university setting working closely with faculty/academic populations.
  • Forward thinking, strategic mindset and experience conceptualizing, planning and implementing strategic initiatives.
  • Lean Six Sigma, Change Management Practitioner Certifications.
  • Experience with University, State, and/or Federal policies that influence higher education. Health sciences experience ideal.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Must be willing and able to travel to various Health Sciences locations: Campus, Hillcrest, East Campus, etc. and maintain a flexible work schedule based on customer needs.
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs for deadlines, and may be required to attend occasional meetings in the evenings.
