DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of the Psychology Management Services Officer (MSO) and the Department Chair, incumbent is responsible for the administrative management of the Student Affairs unit of a large, complex department. The incumbent oversees the Student Affairs administrative and instructional support functions for the Psychology undergraduate and graduate programs including (but not limited to): advising, admissions, outreach and recruitment, course scheduling, student registration, staffing of instructional programs, graduate student financial support, and student enrichment/diversity.
The Director exercises leadership and discretionary authority to solve managerial and programmatic issues and utilizes a high degree of independence, ingenuity, and analytical skills to resolve complex problems without precedent and/or structure.
The Director is responsible for oversight and management, as well as timely and effective delivery of administrative services that fulfill the research, teaching, and outreach mission of Psychology.
The Director functions as the principal adviser to the MSO, Chair, and faculty on a broad range of student affairs issues. As needed and appropriate, represents MSO, Chair, and the Department with other internal and external units.
Establishes and implements new, and refines existing, academic programs, policies, and procedures.
The incumbent organizes, develops, documents, and implements best practices for the Student Affairs unit that are in compliance with UC policies and federal, state, and local regulations. The incumbent conducts process re-engineering where needed, manages data, prepares statistical reports for self and others, and conducts short and long-term planning.
Oversees financial management and resource development for graduate student support and student related activities. The director maintains the Student Affairs unit budget and oversees the planning, management, and coordination of student support to include Graduate Student Research funds, TA funds, Fellowships, Block Grant Allocations and other fund sources.
Manages staffing levels and provides leadership and supervision to a professional student affairs staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Comprehensive understanding of academic programs, processes, and operations in a large public research university.
Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
Interpersonal skills. Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with faculty, students and staff using tact, diplomacy and discretion. Strong negotiating skills to resolve conflicts among staff, faculty, and students.
Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
Advanced knowledge of complex visa and immigration policies, procedures and regulatory requirements for international students and scholars.
Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership. Strong analytical, inductive and deductive reasoning skills. Strong demonstrated problem-solving skills. Demonstrated high-level critical thinking and interpretive skills to analyze situations, define problems, identify concerns, develop, propose and implement solutions. Creativity to analyze and solve unusual and new problems in ways that establish effective and efficient procedures.
Skills in monitoring / assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements. Strong demonstrated understanding of good management, administrative and personnel practices. Demonstrated supervisory skills and experience to monitor production and quality of work, and set performance standards. Ability to assess staff capabilities and to delegate, assign and redistribute work as necessary. Ability to teach/train staff in all aspects of job duties/responsibilities.
In-depth knowledge of the field's post-degree employment opportunities and practices.
Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
Strong knowledge of graduate and undergraduate programs, administration of curriculum, fiscal, and personnel activities. Ability to analyze policies and procedures and advise students, faculty, administrators and others about requirements.
Ability to work independently exercising initiative and judgment in the performance of responsibilities. Strong leadership, organizational, negotiation, decision-making and management skills.
Demonstrated fiscal/accounting skills. Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of finance, general accounting practices, business management, fund accounting, audit trails, and use of cost-centers.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $69,500 - $123,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $33.29 - $59.15
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
