DESCRIPTION

Responsible for the standardized execution of an industry alliance program; brokering, developing and sustaining partnerships. Engages partners, expanding partnerships to maximize the value of the relationship for the University and the organization.

The Director, Corporate Affiliates, Business Development, Industry Outreach and Innovation is responsible for business and industry-focused outreach and innovation and commercialization programs for a variety of Scripps audiences.

Goals and Objectives

The goals and objectives of the position are as follows:

* Develop corporate affiliates program to create new source of revenue and/or support staffing and program costs of executing work plan

* Raise awareness about Scripps research programs with different industrial sectors and businesses to increase opportunity for licensing, sponsoring, and/or competing for research funding

* Where there is Scripps interest, and in collaboration with UC San Diego's Office of Innovation and Commercialization, assist scientists in developing relationships with companies to increase opportunity for licensing, sponsoring, and/or competing for research funding

* Provide interested Scripps students and alumni career services contacts and industry outreach events* Leverage industry relationships for third-party advocacy and stakeholder support for federal, state, and local government relations priorities

* Work with UC San Diego's Office of Innovation and Commercialization to increase the commercialization of Scripps research to increase revenue from patents, licenses, and spin-off companies

The position provides an interface between Scripps and the business community. Represents Scripps to senior executives in corporations and executive directors in industry associations. With input from senior leadership, tailor strategies to different sectors of industry, including but not limited to biotechnology, energy, transportation, information technology, natural resource extraction, futures trading, agriculture, tourism and recreation, and fisheries.

Leads development and execution of additional affiliates programs and industry stakeholder groups that result in career placement for students and postdoctoral scholars

The position works in close collaboration and be in regular communication re; outreach plans and programs with various Scripps external relations functions including, but not limited to government relations, institutional events and venue rentals, development, communications and marketing, international and alumni relations. The position interacts closely with Scripps Department in support of student needs.

Designs persuasive proposals for unique alliances without precedent. Manages active relationships among collaborators and partners including communications and project details

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Deep understanding of faculty and programmatic research interests within the University. Understanding of partnership agreements, patent law, licensing and commercialization. Knowledge, experience and understanding of bridging academic and corporate needs and priorities. Experience leveraging academic research in the private sector for profit.

  • Advanced organizational and project management skills. Ability to lead a team, prioritize personal and team tasks and see projects through from inception to completion on schedule.

  • Previous success at communicating scientific results to key business stakeholders.

  • Understanding and experience with intellectual property in an educational setting.

  • Previous success handling multiple projects, deadlines, and conflicts in an environment of shifting priorities and resource and staff constraints.
