ASSIGNMENT DETAILS

TES is looking for a temporary Data Engineer 2 to support oceanographic research on campus for up to 11 months.

  • Duration: Approximately 11 months.

  • Compensation and Benefits: $35.58/hour. Eligible for Mid-Level Benefits including Medical Benefits, Vacation, Sick, and Holiday pay

  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:30A - 5:00P

  • Location: 100% on-site in La Jolla

DESCRIPTION

  • Under general supervision, participate with project scientists and engineers in the preparation, maintenance, testing, debugging and deployment of scientific datasets, visualizations and other data products in support of physical oceanographic research.

  • The position will liaise with staff researchers, in the design, modification and upkeep of technical documents, source code and data manipulation techniques in support of oceanographic research.

  • Work with 3rd party collaborators and stakeholders to maintain a healthy professional relationship employ diplomacy, and demonstrate tact while meeting all functional and timeliness requirements based on tasking from senior staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Data Science, Ocean Engineering and/or 2 years in a professional setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience producing data products for scientific purposes.

  • Demonstrated experience with Unix-based systems, including administration of apache, tomcat, backups and system troubleshooting. Experience with common programming tools.

  • Knowledge and experience of client-side coding (HTML, CSS, Javascript) and server-side programming languages (PHP, Python, Java).
  • Demonstrated experience using one or more of these languages to design, build and maintain dynamic websites and web applications.
  • Intermediate skills associated with the design, development, modification and deployment of software. Knowledge relating to the effective design and development of software and managing development tasks.
  • Experience with object oriented and functional programming.
  • Ability to assist with the preparation, testing, maintenance and use of on-premises and cloud servers and other computing support equipment.
  • Good communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Ability to set intermediate deadlines and self-report progress as required based on project deliverable and complexity.
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Technically minded and an ability to work safely with others to meet various deadlines.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • The position is 100% on-site. Permit parking and street parking.
  • Research Laboratory appropriate attire with closed-toe shoes as required by Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S).
  • DOJ/FBI background, References, and DMV checks and clearances are required prior to hiring.

This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $74,300 - $134,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $35.58 - $64.42

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
