DESCRIPTION

This is a multi-faceted position that supports several critical financial functions within the Business Office of the School of Biological Sciences. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Accounting and Financial Operations, uses professional concepts to apply organization policies and procedures to oversee financial planning for a variety of business units and operations. Works on problems of limited to moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of multiple factors.

Under general supervision, provides analytical support for accounting transactions, account structure, procurement & purchasing, and core and operations funds management. Assists with developing, reviewing, presenting, and implementing internal administrative policies and procedures with regard to personnel, programs, financial, and recharge facilities within the scope of accounting, accounting structure, and transactions. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action. Applies professional concepts to perform basic financial or resource analysis to understand past performance and determine present and future performance and / or resource allocations. Assists with ensuring faculty have adequate resources for salary support, and ensure all faculty salary support, including GCCP plans, are correct for payroll entry. May assist School Chief Financial Officer (SCFO) or Assistant Dean with unique and complex projects requiring budget forecasting and financial analysis. Perform other duties as assigned.

This position may work remotely, requiring a remote work agreement.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems. Bachelor's Degree in business, accounting or closely related field or comparable combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to gather reasonably retrievable information to organize, and perform basic financial analysis assignments. Demonstrated skill and ability to analyze large quantities of data; extract relevant data, compile, analyze and present data (as reports, models, charts, forecasts,etc.).

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing clearly and concisely. Exceptional overall communication skills, both written and oral. Ability to clearly and concisely communicate ideas, thoughts, complex problems, policies and position statements. Ability to make well-organized, clear, informative, and persuasive presentations, both in one-on-one situations and in group settings. Ability to response well to rapid questioning on difficult and/or sensitive issues. Ability to write for signature of divisional leadership (Dean, Chairs, etc.) when needed.

  • Demonstrated ability using spreadsheet and database software for moderately complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports. High demonstrated level of knowledge, competency and creativity with computer systems and applications including word processing, database, spreadsheet, web development, publishing and presentation software with the ability to work readily and easily with novel software and applications and to actively contribute in the development and execution of novel application-based solutions to data management, communication and process analysis.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills at all levels within the unit; excellent service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. Demonstrated ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment.

  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities. Innovative with the initiative to anticipate, learn, interpret, recommend and implement new procedures, practices and processes adaptable to constantly changing work patterns and business methods to solve unusual and new concerns using means which establish effective and efficient precedents.

  • Ability to function as a member of a team.

  • Intermediate knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.

  • Ability to think strategically and creatively, to anticipate trends, and to transfer that thinking into positive and effective action. Ability to review large quantities of data for purpose of recommending short- and long-term objectives and actions, with ability to develop and successfully implement plans for accomplishing goals.

  • Demonstrated analytical and conceptual ability to evaluate complex issues, formulate options, develop solutions, and communicate results through reports, graphs, charts, financial modeling, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and oral presentations. Ability to tailor materials to potential to audiences with a broad range of subject knowledge.

  • Strong portfolio of interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with tact, diplomacy and sensitivity. Must have the ability to maintain strict confidentiality and discretion in use of information at all times. Must have the ability to develop collegial and productive working relations at all levels of the organization.

  • Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet application (eg Google Sheets). Experience would include complex formulas, pivot tables, and/or macro development.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Must have strong leadership, organization, and planning skills.

  • Strong negotiation problem-solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to act independently and exercise sound judgment with the acumen and sensitivity to identify those decisions and activities which require higher level consultation and/or group collaboration. Ability to exercise a high degree of flexibility and innovation to seek alternative solutions to unique or complex problems and issues.

  • Demonstrated skill in creating, writing, and implementing comprehensive policies, procedures, forms, instructions and handbooks with appropriate technical content, style and grammar, and guiding the approval of such documents through a complex bureaucracy.

  • Ability to train faculty and staff in the effective use of new and existing software tools and other applications.

  • Working experience in using relational databases. Ability to recognize when new data structures will be needed and have a willingness and ability to participate in their design.

  • Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
