DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, the Coral Research Assistant will conduct various coral ecophysiological and engineering experiments, including data analysis, animal husbandry, aquarium maintenance, and the upkeep of algal and bacterial cultures. They will perform imaging and chlorophyll a fluorimetry experiments, synthesize biomaterials, and utilize 3D printing and molding techniques, alongside executing a range of laboratory and field experimental procedures, such as preparing media for cell culture and handling corals. The position may involve travel to coral reefs and scientific diving in locations like Hawai’i, Fiji, and Costa Rica. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for administrative duties as directed by the Principal Investigator (PI), including assisting in the preparation of manuscripts and technical reports, coordinating lab meetings, managing equipment and supplies, maintaining laboratory safety standards, and providing hands-on training for new personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two (2) years of laboratory experience or two (2) years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one (1) year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Theoretical knowledge in ecophysiology and photophysiology to analyze data related to photosynthesis.

  • Familiarity with general animal husbandry tasks.

  • Experience in basic lab techniques such as making buffers, checking pH solutions and photographic imaging.

  • Knowledge and experience with basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, micro-pipettes, biosafety cabinets, incubators, autoclaves, balances, pH meters, and microscopes

  • Knowledge and experience in general lab protocols. Knowledge of basic laboratory safety requirements and procedures, and ability to maintain up-to-date safety training certification.

  • General knowledge of coral science; including relevant laboratory techniques.

  • Experience working with and in the preparation of scientific reagents including common buffers and stock solutions.

  • Experience in making algal media and maintaining algal cultures.

  • Ability to accurately maintain lab records, including use of lab notebooks and online, with strict attention to detail.

  • Experience in data collection.

  • Ability to order and maintain laboratory supplies.

  • Must be willing and able to work with corals.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Ability to acquire SIO research diver certification to a depth of 60'.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $55,374 - $66,064 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $26.52 - $31.64

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
