DESCRIPTION
DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation (VCRI) supports, facilitates and promotes the world-class research enterprise at UC San Diego by a) providing essential services and resources that enhance research and other creative endeavors, b) enabling partnerships and collaborations among researchers at UC San Diego and between UC San Diego and government, industry and other research enterprises, and c) developing infrastructure and policy that promote innovation, an entrepreneurial culture, communication, and compliance for the UC San Diego research enterprise.
The Research Engagement teams work to expand UC San Diego’s research portfolio, increase the competitiveness of sponsored project funding proposals, and support strategic initiatives including large-scale interdisciplinary proposals and UC San Diego’s strategic research themes.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Competitive Intelligence Analyst will lead and support strategic efforts to help proactively identify and respond to emerging national and global research trends, including those set by federal and private sector funders, toinform and guide strategic decision-making for university initiatives and funding applications. This position will directly report to the Executive Director for Research Engagement and will work closely with teams across the VC area and the wider university including Research Development, Government Relations, Foundation and Corporate Relations, and school and department leaders to enhance UC San Diego's ability to plan strategically and respond successfully to research and innovation opportunities across all disciplines.
The incumbent will develop a comprehensive, cross-functional understanding of the external research funding environment to support the identification of emerging research trends, opportunities, and strategicpriorities, and communicate these out to a range of stakeholders across the institution. The incumbent will develop a comprehensive, cross-functional understanding of the University's research portfolio and priorities in order to assist in matching University expertise to opportunities across a wide range of funding agencies and disciplines.
The incumbent will independently create aggregate-level reports about the external and internal research ecosystem for ORI and campus leadership. The incumbent will apply a sophisticated use of analysis and presentation skills that demonstrate a clear understanding of the source data to transform the information into key recommendations for leadership.
The Competitive Intelligence Analyst supports the design, development, composition, and editing of intelligence products to aid university leadership in making informed decisions regarding strategic research areas and funding opportunities. The individual will provide timely, insightful analyses on funding programs and sponsors, connect streams of data and human intelligence on current research at UC San Diego, and stay on top of current best practice in the field of competitive intelligence.

QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Ability to develop a comprehensive, cross-functional understanding of the external research funding environment to support the identification of emerging research trends, opportunities, and strategic, priorities, and communicate these out to a range of stakeholders across the institution.
Understanding of the US research funding landscape, including knowledge of federal funding agencies and strong familiarity with emerging issues in research funding
Experience in research, information analysis, or program evaluation, with knowledge of competitive intelligence techniques.
Demonstrated use of or application of common competitive/strategic intelligence best practices in support of executive decision making.
Ability to collect information and data to support the identification and actionable insights related to emerging research trends, opportunities, and strategic priorities.
Demonstrated experience synthesizing complex information and presenting it to a range of stakeholders.
Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.

Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers, managers and teams.PREFERRED
Certified in intelligence methods by the Society for Competitive Intelligence professionals (SCIP).

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $85,400 - $156,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $40.90 - $75.10
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
