DESCRIPTION

The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) is a world leader in using, innovating and providing cyberinfrastructure to enable advances and new discovery in science and engineering. Cyberinfrastructure refers to an accessible, integrated network of high-performance computing resources and expertise, focused on accelerating scientific inquiry and discovery. Focusing on data-oriented and computational science and engineering applications, SDSC serves as an international resource for data cyberinfrastructure through the provision of software, hardware and human resources in multidisciplinary science and engineering, and is a leading national cyberinfrastructure center to the National Science Foundation (NSF) and broader community. SDSC supports hundreds of multidisciplinary programs spanning a wide variety of domains, from earth sciences and biology to astrophysics, bioinformatics, and health IT.

The Data Enabled Scientific Computing (DESC) division designs and jointly proposes with other SDSC researchers, High Performance Computing (HPC) systems in response to multi-million dollar (~20 million dollars) call-for-proposals from NSF, various government organizations and UC entities. Research leaders within DESC submit high performance computing (HPC), CI, computational science and scientific software research proposals and acquire funding from NSF, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD) and industry. The Cyberinfrastructure Solutions and Services group, within the DESC division, carries out Cyberinfrastructure (CI) research and development projects, manages and provides scientific computing support for UC user communities, and delivers HPC training and education.

The Computational and Data Science Research Specialist III will collaborate closely with research teams to design and develop end-to-end CI solutions that streamline access to distributed computing & data resources. S/he will develop and optimize a variety of computational, data science, and CI research tools, components, and applications. The incumbent will use computer science, data science, and CI software research and development principles, with relevant domain science knowledge where applicable, along with professional programming concepts for medium-sized projects or portions of larger projects. S/he will research and identify novel cyberinfrastructure approaches to deliver solutions for a wide range of use cases including science gateways, data integrity and provenance, native applications, and web services. The successful candidate will perform research on current and future technologies related to HPC, cloud computing, data provenance, blockchain, and user interfaces.

Incumbent's primary role is to develop cyberinfrastructure to lower the barrier of using HPC and data resources and to provide support for scientific clients and researchers of SDSC HPC systems. S/he will work with SDSC program managers to develop and maintain research collaborations/projects utilizing the SDSC HPC resources and will proactively work with researchers and users of HPC and UC campus cluster resources to identify research computational and data analytics needs and lead development projects that address them within the distributed computing framework.
