DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Join the Residential, Retail and Supply Chain Services (RRSS) team at UC San Diego, a dynamic and innovative campus department dedicated to delivering exceptional service to the university community. As a valued RRSS team member, you will be contributing to a broad and complex organization consisting of five key units: Housing, Dining and Hospitality (HDH), Integrated Procure-to-Pay Solutions (IPPS), the UC San Diego Bookstore, Triton Print & Digital Media, and the Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC). With a focus on innovation and customer satisfaction, RRSS aims to inclusively meet the diverse needs of the UC San Diego community while fostering a sense of belonging for our students and staff.

As a member of the HDH team, you will be part of a self-funded unit with over 900 staff employees, 1,000 student employees, and an annual operating budget of $250 million, providing housing and dining services to over 20,000 students, faculty, staff, and their families. POSITION OVERVIEW

To act as a working team leader with responsibilities to include banquet service, catering deliveries, customer service, on-the-job training and quality control in a catering environment. Basic responsibilities will include any or all of the following: problem-solving in a timely manner, catering event management, customer service and complaints, staff shortages, equipment and personnel. Will follow established procedures in the absence of the supervisor. In coordination with their supervisor, will be responsible for banquet setup, customer service, controlling labor hours and event execution. Skill and knowledge to provide banquet service based on Catering department standards. May be assigned shifts as Event Lead, Event Manager, Service Expediter, Service Opener or Service Closer. May be assigned administrative tasks involved in processing banquet event orders for execution by Service.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Skill and background in culinary arts, with skill as a banquet server and skills to create and present food attractively.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with people of many diverse backgrounds, including students, staff, faculty, and guests.

  • Knowledge and ability to effectively utilize employees and equipment in daily routines as well as unforseen emergencies in a catering environment.

  • Knowledge and skill in teaching and delegating of tasks to subordinates and effectively monitoring and evaluating their performance in a catering environment.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills to effectively manage time.

  • Skill and ability to handle stressful situations, multiple deadlines and difficult people in a calm professional manner.

  • Current California Driver's License with ability to maintain a good driving record through DMV report.

  • Writing skills to communicate procedures, evaluations and recommendations to management.

  • Demonstrated initiative to:

1) identify unit level problems and/or needs

2) develop solutions and/or needs proposals

3) and implement action plans with limited assistance and input.

  • Mathematical, and accounting skills to accurately complete forms, and service records and understand reports in order to make recommendations and take appropriate actions.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Operating needs of the department require varied work schedules (i.e., a.m., p.m., and/or weekend shifts and/or 10 hour workday).

  • There may be dates when time-off requests cannot be approved due to business needs. Employees may be required to take off (vacation or temporary layoff) during scheduled operational shutdown periods, such as Christmas, Spring & Summer breaks.

  • Health codes require prescribed uniform, hair covering, and good personal hygiene.

  • Meal schedules require extreme attention to promptness and excellent attendance. Meal perquisite is required for all Food Service employees.

  • Employees may be required to change work location on a daily basis as needed or for an indefinite time period. Must be able to work flexible hours to accommodate Catering schedule.

  • Background Check required. Must possess a valid California Driver License and be able to maintain a safe driving record. Participation in the DMV pull program required .

  • CANRA Mandated Reporter: This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $43,493 - $51,866 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $20.83 - $24.84

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
