This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working onsite 2 days per week on UCSD Campus and remote.

The Associate Director of Media Relations at UC San Diego Health Sciences will blend their significant writing expertise, media savvy, project management skills, and sound judgment to advance the profile of the health sciences to both internal and external audiences. Day-to-day work involves writing and editing top-notch profiles, feature stories and research-related press releases for web, social media, newsletters and news media outlets, frequently working under tight deadlines. The Associate Director will also partner closely with health sciences and university communications colleagues to ensure content includes visually engaging photography or other graphics and is effectively distributed across content channels.

As a media strategist, the Associate Director will build and maintain strong relationships with key reporters, identify and train spokespeople, coordinate responses to media inquiries and develop and implement measurable and proactive media and amplification strategies that enhance the school’s reputation and thought leadership.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Nine years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus five years of related experience/training.

  • Advanced knowledge of the location, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives, programs, policies and infrastructure, and knowledge of issues in higher education as well as current location concerns and issues.

  • Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Advanced judgment, analytical and decision-making skills and advanced political acumen.

  • Advanced skill in problem recognition, avoidance and resolution.

  • Skill to maintain confidentiality.

  • Experience and proven success in principles, practices, concepts and technical requirements in news, media communications and media relations.

  • Proven experience designing and executing successful public relations campaigns.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ten (10) years of related experience, education/training in writing and/or communicating health sciences or research topics.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $91,300 - $170,700 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $43.73 - $81.75

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
