DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor, Advancement Services, the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Alumni Relations (AVC, AR) will manage a portfolio of prospective donors that will include prospects whose capacity to give to the University is a minimum of $1 million. In addition to assigned high-capacity donors, the incumbent will develop donors for his/her portfolio through the interactions developed through programs. In this role, the AVC, AR will lead and support the development of targeted and coordinated plans for prospects that align that prospect’s deepest interests, passions, and philanthropic objectives with the University’s current or future initiatives, projects, and programs. The AVC, AR will assist in developing fundraising strategies and will marshal internal support for transformational fundraising proposals, bringing the best opportunity for success to each donor solicitation. This position will require a very high level of communication and collaboration with the Chancellor, the Executive Vice Chancellor, the Vice Chancellors, Deans, Faculty, Assistant and Associate Vice Chancellors, and frontline fundraisers for Advancement.
QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations, including principles, concepts, techniques and procedures.
Advanced knowledge of design and implementation of identification, cultivation and solicitation strategies and techniques.
Advanced skills to conceive, design, implement and evaluate effective fundraising programs.
Advanced knowledge of leadership and management principles, concepts, techniques, etc.
Advanced knowledge of the campus and / or medical center, its achievements, vision, mission, goals, objectives and issues of concern both on campus and / or medical center as well as in higher education, research and medical care or clinical operations.
Advanced leadership / management skills, including skills to select, train, mentor, motivate and evaluate all levels of staff.
Advanced written, oral and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships within all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
Advanced skills to meet predetermined goals and objectives, including securing gifts and meeting fundraising objectives.
Advanced political acumen skills.
Advanced strategic planning, critical thinking, analytical and persuasion / negotiation skills.
Advanced marketing skills.
Working knowledge of foundations and non-profit, public benefit corporations.
Demonstrated experience at creating and implementing a fundamental plan for successful capital campaigns, including feasibility studies, identification of campaign projects, establishment of priorities, strategy, cultivation, and solicitation, negotiation, finalization of proposals and follow through, while providing leadership to the University Development team.
Demonstrated success at raising funds by developing and implementing organizational and strategic communication plans that incorporate clear definition of goals, target audiences, and strategies in-line with institutional goals.
Proven success in fundraising involving annual giving, major gifts, foundations and corporations, planned giving from individuals as well as local and national corporations and foundations.
Demonstrated knowledge, accountability and comprehension skills to formulate budgetary planning and prioritization of projects, programs and activities, using sound judgment while meeting organizational goals.
Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to represent UC San Diego favorably to both campus and community constituents.
Proven record of writing proposals for a significant project/gift ($100,000+) directed to individuals, foundations, and corporations.
Proven ability to work independently; exercising initiative to provide supervisor and other UC San Diego officials with information to keep them adequately informed. Display a willingness to seek counsel when appropriate.
Proven ability to provide critical analysis, using sound judgment with realistic expectations for projected results.
Demonstrated ability to inspire confidence by displaying a strong sense of ethical conduct that will effectively motivate staff and persuade diverse groups.
Strong written and oral communications skills, with excellent grammar and syntax usage.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and use good judgment, discretion, and sensitivity in handling business operations and personnel issues.
Demonstrated understanding of the philosophy of quality service and group process, with proven aptitude for working as part of a team.
Proven ability in developing an effective volunteer structure to maximize the strengths of volunteers, thereby creating a sound, strong volunteer base for fundraising purposes.
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in an academic environment.

Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
Must be willing and able to travel.
Must have access to reliable transportation.
Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $163,800 - $331,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $78.45 - $158.62
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
