The Student Health and Well-being (SHW) cluster of the UC San Diego, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes the expansion of the student health and well-being center under the oversight of the executive director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration.

SHS provides oversight of primary urgent care, women’s health and specialty care for a student body of over 39,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students as well as supporting services including laboratory, pharmacy, imaging. SHS staff consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, Social workers, medical assistants, pharmacists, x-ray technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical lab assistant, administrative and other healthcare professionals. SHS provides integrated clinical services to address the medical needs of the individual students, as well as to foster the well-being of the students as a whole person. In addition, SHS supports the public health needs of the campus community. SHS is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care and is fully committed to continuous quality and safety improvement through the utilization of data, outcome, and patient experience measurements.

Reporting to SHS Director of Medical Services, responsibilities include the provision of direct patient care and clinical and administrative leadership for the medical practice of primary care, urgent care and specialty physician services. The individual is responsible for achieving organizational objectives through the coordinated operational efficiency, clinical management and resource utilization. Ensures compliance with all regulations and accreditation standards, controlling liability risk, and acts on behalf of the SHS Director of Medical Services in their absence.

As the SHS Assistant Medical Director, they will provide both individual clinical services and consultations for patients in Primary Care, Urgent Care and Specialty clinics (as qualified) to support staff with the diagnosis and treatment of complex patients, and will provide a liaison to other departments, the local medical community, and respond to all campus public health emergencies.

CT: Reporting to the Medical Director, under general direction, position serves as head of a unit within Student Health Services.

In collaboration with the Director of Medical Services, provide overall leadership for medical practice, clinical quality improvement, delivery of clinical services, and continuing medical and professional education for providers at SHS. Under the general direction of the Director of Medical Services, ensures SHS provides access to high quality, cost effective, primary care, specialty care, ancillary medical and pharmaceutical services to the student campus community.

Assists the SHS Director of Medical Services in setting and interpreting goals, directions, policies and procedures related to the provision of high quality, cost effective medical care. Lead the SHS Quality Improvement Committee, conducting peer review, audits, clinical studies and investigation of adverse clinical events.


  • Demonstrated ability to practice medicine and surgery by evidence of graduation from a class A accredited school of medicine with the degree of M.D. or D.O.

  • Proven ability to practice medicine and surgery in the state of California by evidence of a current valid license.

  • Board Certified in a primary care discipline: Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics.

  • Demonstrated ability to prescribe controlled substances by evidence of a current valid federal controlled substance registration (DEA certificate).

  • Current BLS certification.

  • Clinical experience in an ambulatory or urgent care setting. Board certification in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine or Emergency Medicine.

  • Proven management experience in a complex healthcare facility with proven ability to analyze, interpret and apply management principles, practices and techniques in the conduct of business. Thorough knowledge of administration of ambulatory healthcare.

  • Strong leadership, supervisory and consensus-building skills with the knowledge to act within University regulations and in the best interest of the unit. Ability to manage crisis situations and effectively facilitate and resolve interpersonal conflicts. Knowledge and skill in supervision and organizational management. Skill in recruitment, selection, evaluation, delegation, development, motivation, reward and discipline. Knowledge of management theory and practice in complex professional organizations (healthcare desirable).

  • Skill to develop relationships and interact and communicate with diverse groups of people using tact, sound judgment, diplomacy and flexibility. Skill to communicate effectively with students, staff, medical providers, faculty, visitors, parents and external contacts. Ability and willingness to develop, and work as part of a collaborative team to achieve common objectives. Skill to participate effectively on committee assignments.

  • Proven skill to practice emergency medicine, perform minor surgery, and wound care. Skill to record in an orderly and logical manner the history, exam, assessment, treatment plan, patient education, and other information related to patient care. Skill to provide consultation to health care providers. Skill to serve a large volume of patients rapidly and effectively by appointment or on a walk-in basis within set time limits. Working knowledge of public and preventive health principles and practices. Knowledge of private and group medical practice.

  • Knowledge of federal and state laws regarding medical records, student information management, right to privacy and confidentiality (including HIPAA and FERPA). Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Thorough knowledge of health insurance benefit structures and claim procedures.

  • Proven skill to create and present informational or training programs for medical providers, staff, students or other groups.

  • Thorough knowledge of good laboratory and medical X-ray practices and safety requirements in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.

  • Position requires the knowledge of fiscal/budget processes of a medical organization.


  • Knowledge of community resources and public health requirements of the county of San Diego and the state of California. Knowledge of age-specific health education goals and strategies, including both preventive and emergency interventions.
  • Proficient skill in use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, email, medical information and web software. Intermediate or advance skill in use of (some or all) MS Excel, MS Word, MS Access, MS Outlook, MS Internet Explorer, and electronic medical records systems..


  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Annual tuberculosis screening and Influenza vaccination are required.
  • In the absence of vaccination records, blood or titer test must be performed to determine if other immunizations are required.
  • Subject to a thorough credentialing and background check.
  • Confidentiality agreement and individual HIPAA training are required.
  • Must have flexible schedule; occasional evening and weekend work. Weekly schedule may include evening hours if need arises.
  • May be required to answer phone calls and respond to campus emergencies outside of regular operating hours.
