DESCRIPTION

The Aquatics Safety and Training Project Manager is an experienced leader for a non-credited recreational or sports program. Designs, creates, implements, and instructs recreational safety training, risk management and aquatics programs. Required to demonstrate considerable discretion, initiative, and independence to resolve issues and perform other duties as assigned.

The Aquatics Safety and Training Program Manager is responsible for developing and managing a variety of safety activities, classes, programs, and workshops. These include offerings from the American Red Cross: Lifeguard Training, Title XXII, CPR, AED, Naloxone and First Aid certification classes. Additionally, this role oversees classes from the American Heart Association: Basic Life Support; and has a significant role in the continued development and instruction of the Recreation Departments internal certification classes such as the UC San Diego Swim Instructor and Coaches Safety Certification courses. Provides assistance at Recreation Department special events and activities and makes presentations to groups on and off campus to promote the Recreation Department programs the position manages.

The Aquatics Safety and Training Program Manager plays a pivotal role in developing personnel, including training, evaluation, mentoring, and performance management for both student and non-student staff.

This role involves the development and implementation of budgets specific to the safety programs under its purview. This includes preparing and managing budgets, monitoring expenses, and making budget recommendations to management.

The Aquatics Safety and Training Program Manager takes responsibility for mitigating risks associated with aquatics and safety programs. Works with other departments to develop, train and implement safety protocols and emergency response plans to minimize risk and ensures that all aquatic activities are conducted in a safe and responsible manner. rains, and implements safety protocols and emergency response plans to minimize risk. This position provides daily supervision of 10 student and non-student instructors.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Knowledge of Red Cross and American Heart Association course content and certification requirements. Ability to develop course curriculum to meet certification requirements. Thorough operative knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of aquatics (swimming, lifeguarding) and safety training instruction at all levels and for all populations including youth and special populations.

  • Experienced in curriculum development tailored to certification requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach and motivate class participants, especially in swim instruction and safety certifications that contribute to high engagement and positive outcomes.

  • Client service focused, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills to resolve non-standard issues. Skilled at communicating program offerings to potential participants. Is able to identify problems and effectively resolve them.

  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills in the English language. Demonstrated ability to effectively teach, motivate and console class participants.

  • Strong proficiency in the use of basic computer applications relevant to job duties. Able to use leverage software for program management to foster efficiency and ease of information sharing to instructors and participants.

  • Thorough knowledge of campus policies and procedures. Understands policies relevant to program operation and seeks out supervisor for insight when questions arise related to compliance.

  • Skills to develop original ideas, creative problem-solving skills in a varied and challenging environment including service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decision-making, and critical thinking skills. Demonstrated experience in successful administration of recreational instruction programs. Proven ability to design operational systems and policies for the efficient functioning of aquatics and safety programs.

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization. Ability to inspire student and non-student staff. Has the facilitation skills to mitigate interpersonal conflict in staff leadership teams. Is able to provide contribute to departmental mission and activities beyond the direct program area.

  • Ability to work in youth camps, fitness and outdoor programs.

  • Strong operating knowledge in safety, first aid and risk management; ability to independently plan, organize and evaluate risk management policies and programs as they pertain to aquatics and safety programs.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Ability to successfully pass FBI and DOJ Criminal Background Check.

  • Must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays, to attend on- and off-campus events.

  • Must be willing and able to lead many of the classes and training that are offered through the program.

  • Mandated Reporter: This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $52,100 - $87,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $24.95 - $42.10

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
