DESCRIPTION

UC San Diego Health Sciences encompasses UC San Diego Health, the region's only academic health system, UC San Diego School of Medicine, one of the nation's top research-intensive medical schools, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Southern California's first public school of pharmacy, and Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science. The division of Medical Education within the UC San Diego School of Medicine consists of the following units: Undergraduate Medical Education, Admissions & Student Affairs, Diversity and Community Partnerships, Graduate Medical Education, Continuing Medical Education & Faculty Development, Simulation Education, Physician Assistant Education, Anatomical Services, Business Affairs and Educational Technology. The division supports the education, training and co-curricular activities of approximately 560 medical students, 90 physician assistant students, 1000 residents and fellows as well as the faculty, physician and healthcare providers at UCSD’s School of Medicine, its' Medical Centers, and affiliates.

Responsible for independently directing operations of the Anatomical Preparation Laboratory. Manage resource inventories, decide request priorities, re-allocate cadaveric material, and direct morgue daily business. Independently make cadaver disposition decisions, and embalm or create disarticulated specimens as priorities indicate. Coordinate with Director of Anatomical Services to maintain a perpetual inventory of cadavers, specimens, and prosections. Maintain critical donor records and other legal documents. Maintain compliance of Program with state and federal statutes, as well as University system-wide and local policies. Responsible to coordinate with faculty to determine educational needs and participate in the organization, presentation, and breakdown of the School of Medicine (SOM) and SPPS core course laboratories and Continuing Medical Education (CME) courses covering several medical disciplines. Perform brain autopsies for existing university brain donation programs contributing critical insights to medical research and diagnostics. The role requires expertise in neuropathology, meticulous documentation, and adherence to safety and ethical standards in the examination of brain tissue.

Applies extensive knowledge of body donation protocols and processes to lead major program components of an anatomical donation program. Performs full range of all aspects of the body donation program. Demonstrates good judgement in allocating anatomical materials, as required by clinical educators, researchers, and clinics. Provides training to staff and students, provides and presents training materials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of working in a bio hazardous workplace, including handling of blood borne pathogens, formaldehyde monitoring and storage of hazardous materials.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of California health department regulations on vital statistics and experience filing death certificates and disposition permits.

  • Technical experience in preparation techniques for long-term preservation in autopsy- like dissecting or recoveries to create specialized anatomical specimens.

  • Solid skills to provide direction and guidance to less experienced staff members and medical students; and presenting materials to medical students.

  • Ability to communicate with faculty, medical students, staff, prospective donors and the general public regarding the use of anatomical gifts and anatomical materials.

  • Demonstrated computer skills in using database registry.

  • Knowledge of California law governing crematories, funeral directors, embalmers, Cal-OSHA, organ donations, California business and professions code demonstrated knowledge of funeral cemetery, and crematory codes.

  • Solid interpersonal skills to develop relationships with peers, faculty, student and donor families.

  • Theoretical knowledge of human anatomy, biology and physiology.

  • Ability to oversee cremation and scattering of cremated donor remains.

  • Ability to perform dissections and preparations for anatomy study in an efficient and skillful manner.

  • California Licensed Embalmer

  • California Funeral Director’s License

  • Must have a valid CA driver's license and acceptable driving record

  • Must possess a Crematory Manager's and Crematory Operator's license or be willing to sit for and pass this exam

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Tissue bank specialist certification is preferred.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Must be able to pass all agency background/clearance checks including, but not limited to Military Bases and Hospitals, as needed throughout the term of employment.

  • Must be willing to work with hazardous materials including carcinogenic, toxic and corrosive chemicals.

  • Must be willing to work with cadavers in experimental circumstances.

  • The nature of the work requires that employee be able to meet the demands of the job 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

  • Ability to lift 100 or more pounds.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $85,400 - $156,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $40.90 - $75.10

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
