This is a one (1) year 100% contract position. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs and funding of the department.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Office of Government Relations, Research Development, Strategic Partnerships, and Events provides leadership and a broad range of services to UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Through a variety of programs and activities, the office facilitates extramural funding at the federal, state and local levels, promotes strategic collaboration with external partners, and engages key external stakeholders in support of Scripps programs and goals.

Program areas include research development, planning, positioning, and partnerships; government, corporate, alumni and international relations; institutional events and venue management; and executive office analytical support.

The office focuses on the following objectives:

  • Identify and secure opportunities and funding to advance Scripps priorities and research programs.

  • Develop and execute programs and activities to inform key partners and stakeholders, including research funding sponsors and government at all levels about Scripps priorities and projects.

  • Raise awareness of Scripps with local, national and international partners and funders and develop new strategic partnerships to advance priorities.

  • Create and maintain relationships with industry partners and promote innovation and technology commercialization initiatives.

  • Engage, strengthen, and support Scripps alumni and create and leverage opportunities for UC San Diego alumni to discover and connect with Scripps.

  • Develop and execute annual plan of institutional events to increase communication and collaboration within Scripps.

  • Engage a variety of institutional research development, institutional positioning, and strategic planning efforts.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Uses the professional concepts of alumni and external relations to assist in implementing programs and / or communication strategies designed to inform key constituencies of institutional programs, activities, policies and practices.

Under the direction of the Director of Federal Government Relations, this role provides support to the Office of Government Relations, Research Development, Strategic Partnerships, and Events at UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography, focusing on external stakeholder events and alumni engagement. Assists in planning and organizing high-level government and key external partner visits, events, and meetings, as well as maintaining relationships with alumni and creating opportunities for them to connect with Scripps. Provides administrative support, including preparing written materials, managing calendars, and coordinating travel arrangements, to advance Scripps' priorities and research programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Organizational skills including skills to meet prescribed deadlines.

  • Written, verbal and interpersonal skills, including tact and political acumen to effectively represent the institution to a variety of constituencies.

  • Analytical and critical thinking skills.

  • Applicable computer skills including Microsoft office suite and Google drive.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer contingent upon successful completion of a background check.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $53,800 - $91,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $25.77 - $43.58

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
