The Oncology Business Intelligence and Data Analytics Manager (OBIDAM) position is part of Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, ranked by US News and World Report as the #17 Cancer Center in the country and one of only 40 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States. This designation is reserved for cancer centers with the highest achievements in cancer research, clinical care, education, and community contributions. Reporting directly to the Chief Administrative Officer, Oncology and Radiation Therapy Services, the OBIDAM will be responsible for oncology data analytics and IS governance and management. The Manager will provide data driven project management and analytics for mid to large-scale, complex and strategic projects while coordinating and communicating among executive sponsors, steering committees, project team, collaborating organization and other internal and external stakeholders. This is a key position on the cancer centers’ operations management team. The OBIDAM position involves analysis of complex business problems using data to provide insight to decision makers. It is expected that the successful candidate will identify and interpret trends and patterns in datasets to locate influences. Subsequently, this position will develop forecasts, recommendations, and strategic / tactical plans based on business data and market knowledge.

Once trends have been identified and analyzed, and strategic plans have been developed, in many cases the OBIDAM will be charged with directing their implementation in a matrixed management model. Consequently, this position requires excellent communication skills and high emotional intelligence.

This position works closely with the entire oncology senior executive team including nursing executives, operations, radiation oncology, strategy, quality, and all of the oncology physicians. UC San Diego is a highly data driven organization and the OBIDAM will be the "point person" for securing, analyzing, and interpreting the vast amounts of data contained within Moores to change and improve the quality and efficiency of care we provide to our patients.

All of these duties require the use of tact, strict confidentiality in the handling of sensitive information, independent judgment, discretion, and flexibility. The successful candidate will also be adept at matrix management with the expectation of leading diverse work groups and teams. The incumbent will be a representative of UC San Diego Health System and should exemplify UC San Diego Health, Moores Cancer Center's core values.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Consults with end users to gather and clarify data and reporting needs for complex business intelligence problems, solutions, and analytics. Writes queries, develops report templates, and dashboards.

  • Performs predictive analysis and forecasting to provide information that supports organizational goals. Mines data to quantify relationships and identify issues warranting further analysis.

  • Conducts industry benchmarking analysis and develops quantitative business cases. Presents recommendations to managers.

  • Participates in developing and / or delivering metrics and curriculum for end user training to ensure user competence, data access, and optimal performance of BI tools and processes.

  • Chairs oncology IT executive committee prioritizing and overseeing implementation of oncology information services projects. These would include, but are not limited to modifications to Epic electronic health records, expansion of Epic tools and capabilities, development of data interfaces for clinical equipment and technology.

  • Serves on other internal committees and participates on cross-functional teams to solve business, process, service and / systems issues.


  • Bachelor's degree in business, healthcare administration or related areas and/or equivalent experience/training. Experience in a hospital, ambulatory, or oncology setting (preferred).

  • Minimum of three (3) or more years of relevant experience in data management, data integration, analysis, and project management within healthcare and/or academic and multi-hospital/clinical environments. Five (5) years preferred.

  • Consistently exhibits strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage complex information, assess problems, and develop effective solutions. Strong skills in analyzing, researching and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposal / analyses.

  • Highly motivated, numerate, logical thinker, with a passion for strategic thinking and applying quantitative rigor to unstructured problems in the context of business decision making.

  • Always produces high-quality reports and documentation. Distinguished spreadsheeting capabilities and graphical presentation of complex data sets.

  • Excellent skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook is required; and willingness to learn new software and management tools as needed.

  • Consistently demonstrates knowledge of relevant internal databases, BI applications and tools. Experience using healthcare management systems (i.e. Epic). Deep understanding data management, database systems, and us of statistical tools and business reporting, including Excel SQL to identify trends, opportunities, and data issues.

  • Proven ability to effectively manage the relationships and interfaces with multiple departments by acting as a matrix manager with senior leadership and physician champions.

  • Effectively serves as a technical resource providing advice and counsel on business intelligence issues. Possess interpersonal human-relation skills to employ tact, diplomacy and flexibility. Ability to successfully establish and maintain positive and goal-oriented working relationships with a diverse population.

  • Exhibits strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex information in a clear, concise manner. Outstanding ability and skill to speak before large and small audiences with poise and confidence. Ability to convene meetings and lead discussions. Ability to effectively present to diverse groups, management levels, government agencies and stakeholders.

  • Consistently demonstrates attention to detail with ability to manage time and organize competing priorities. Excellent organizational and time management skills, with proven ability to adapt to changing priorities, manage numerous diverse projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and apply creativity (originality) in problem solving.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a professional attitude during interaction with a wide variety of personalities in demanding situations. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, faculty and students, and to work effectively as part of a team.

  • Exhibits strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with a broad range of professional and technical staff.

  • Proven ability to multi-task and perform effectively in fast-paced, complex, dynamic, and deadline-driven environments.


  • Experience with Epic and/or other electronic health record systems for report creation and execution.


  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
