Biomedical Informatics is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of biology, medicine, and quantitative sciences. Biomedical informatics researchers develop new methods to integrate and analyze vast amounts of data generated in the laboratory, clinical and translational research, clinical encounters, and population studies.
The goals of the Department of Biomedical Informatics are to (1) promote excellence in biomedical informatics research, (2) collaborate with biomedical researchers in developing new quantitative methods that enable the formulation and testing of original hypotheses, (3) train the next generation of biomedical informatics specialists, and (4) interface with engineering, mathematics, information and computer science communities, serving as a hub for quantitative scientists focused on biomedical research. This department leads multiple federally and non-profit funded biomedical research projects, which are focused on the integration, analysis, and sharing of biomedical and health care data for the scientific community, as well as patient-centered research. In addition, the department runs a complex computational infrastructure that allows access and analysis of these data in a privacy-preserving manner.
Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced software professional with a full understanding of industry practices, community standards and relevant policies and procedures to medium-sized projects or portions of large projects with moderate scope and complexity. Resolves a wide range of issues. Demonstrates competency in selecting tools, methods and techniques to obtain results.
Applications Programmer will have responsibility over user application development and administration, web resource development, data analysis and the presentation and discussion of data for a laboratory focused in understanding the impact of genetic variation, inherited or somatic on human diseases and cancer. These problems are addressed using computational biology, genomics, biochemistry and molecular approaches using hypothesis-testing and hypothesis generating components.
Duties will include designing and coding new systems and/or modifications as needed, integrating applications with network file systems and distributed network environments, performing database administration functions leveraging system-level virtualization technology such as docker and workflow languages. In web development, the Bioinformatics Programmer will assist with developing and maintaining web applications, implement queries and integrate bioinformatic tools for the analysis. Finally, programmer will create bioinformatic tools for the purpose of data analysis through statistics and natural computation, data mining and software optimization.
Seven (7) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus three (3) years of related experience/training.
Advanced skills associated with software design, modification, implementation and deployment, including object-oriented programming concepts.
Thorough experience with the identification and use of code libraries and open-source forums.
Knowledge of Linux and MacOS operating systems and related software packages. Ability to perform routine system/network administrative function on these systems.
Experience working with MVC architecture development using existing frameworks such as Laravel, Django, Spring, Play.
Intermediate knowledge of secure software development.
Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs and how systems can support those needs. Demonstrated ability to develop conversion and system implementation plans.
Demonstrated ability to interface with management on a regular basis.
Experience writing high-quality, well-documented, well-tested code.
Experience with planning for deployment and creation of feedback mechanisms.
Demonstrated software repository skills. Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
Thorough experience with common programming tools. Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications.
Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
Demonstrated broad problem-solving skills.
- Experience with J2EE Web Application development and using JBoss on both LINUX and Windows platforms.
