The Department of Medicine is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine and is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

Under supervision from the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant will conduct the following experiments with guided research in several different areas.

Isolation of vascular endothelial/smooth muscle cells from mouse heart and lung.Molecular biological experiments (i.e., cloning, development and application of Adenoviral- and Adeno-associated viral vectors Western Blot, immunoprecipitation, site-directed mutagenesis, PCR, qPCR). Electrophysiological experiments (i.e., measurement of Ca2+ and ROS concentration in cytoplasm and mitochondria). Immunofluorescence experiment. Perform data acquisition and analysis, grant and manuscript preparation, and presentation of findings at weekly lab meetings. Maintaining transgenic mice colony including breeding and genotyping, management of lab research records including methodological approaches, experimental records and protocols, and maintaining a clean lab and the function of lab equipment.


  • Theoretical and working knowledge in advanced molecular biology and cell physiology.

  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques for cell culture.

  • Proven ability to contribute to experimental design, analysis interpretation of the results, and troubleshooting.

  • Experience assisting with writing scientific manuscripts and contributing to teamwork on in vitro cell electrophysiological experiments.

  • Ability to isolate animal cells and conduct molecular biological and cell physiological experiments.

  • Proven ability and experience in gene cloning, overexpression, and silencing in the cells and tissues.

  • Demonstrated ability in Western Blot, PCR, and qPCR.

  • Ability and experience in immunofluorescence experiments using fluorescence microscope.

  • Demonstrated skill to work with animals, as well as animal and human tissues.

  • Knowledge of the following specialized programs; GraphPad, EndNote, and MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint.

  • Ability to read scientific literature, understand appropriate study design, follow study procedures and protocol, and maintain participant confidentiality.

  • Effective and diplomatic oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a variety of personnel from different laboratories and instruct in optimal procedures for assays.


  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Must be available to work some weekends & evenings to complete experiments.
  • Must be able to work with laboratory animals (mice).
